Welcome to the World of Puffins! By: Hannah
If you don’t know a lot about Puffins, you came to the right place! Did you know that puffins’ lives are a little bit more than 1/3 of our lives? Their full life is only 25 years! They look like small, penguin-like creatures. If you think this is a lot of information, this is just the beginning!
Some people say that puffins look like clowns, but I disagree. Puffins are feathered animals which means that they’re birds. They are small, cute, and they have webbed feet. Webbed feet help animals swim. They are mostly white, orange, and black. They have wings and a beak. Puffins are 12-15 inches tall and they weigh 1 ¾ pounds. How cute are puffins?!?
Puffins can live in more than one place depending on what kind of Puffin it is. Puffins live in the United States and Africa. They live in grassy areas with water nearby. Most puffins live in the North Atlantic, Arctic or Northern Pacific Oceans. The weather changes by getting colder and warmer through the years. Puffins live along seacoasts, on cliffs, and on islands to protect themselves from predators. Who knew puffins could live in so many different places?
There are so many Puffins in this world, and they’re all omnivores. Puffins eat a variety of different foods. They eat by chewing. Puffins like to eat sea urchins, fish, squid, mollusks, and algae. They find their food by going fishing. They usually fish during the day. Their predators are foxes, mink, and weasels. Watch out puffins, larger animals are after you!
Puffins go through a very different life cycle than most organisms. Puffins first hatch from their egg. Puffins’ eyes open when they’re two days old. Next, they go through the stage of a baby Puffin. Not long after that, Puffins turn into young Puffins. Their next and last stage is the adult Puffin. That is a total of 25 years and sometimes even longer. The puffins’ way of living is so strange!
Wow, Puffins are so interesting! They live in so many different places, eat so many different foods, and much, much more! Puffins are gray when they’re babies, but they’re white, black, and orange when they grow up! Puffins change a lot through their life cycle! Puffins are so weird, but so cool! What could be better than a Puffin?!?
