THE WAY John 14: 1-6
Some background… • Jesus informs disciples of his betrayal by Judas • …of Peter’s betrayal • …of His imminent death • The world as the disciples understood it was falling apart.
Jesus offers hope… • “Let not your heart be troubled…” • A theology of here and now, health & prosperity, entitlement, heaven on earth, and it’s “all about me” consumer mentality has robbed God’s people of the truth…. • Our hope is based on who Jesus is and what Jesus says: • v1b “Believe in God and in Christ.”
5 Reasons not to be troubled • Our Father has many mansions • Jesus is preparing a place • That place is for us based on v 6 • Jesus is coming again to this earth • Jesus will receive us to Himself • Home is where your heart is….where is your heart?
This world is not our home • Jm 2:5 “Listen, beloved, did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith & heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love him?” • “The kingdoms of this world, they have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.” • We sing it, BUT DO WE BELIEVE IT?
“I go to prepare a place…” • There is an unseen dimension which coexists w/the material world we presently perceive. (Elisha prayed that the eyes of Gehazi would be opened!) • 1 Cor 2:9 “Eye has not seen nor ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love Him.” • Jn 14:3 “….that where I am, you may also be.”
How do we get there? • Jn 14:6 “I AM (Gr: ego eimi – I alone ) the Way, the Truth and the Life…” • Mt 7:13 “Narrow is the way which leads to life eternal, & broad is the path that leads to destruction.” • The Father kept the way to heaven very exclusive so that when counterfeits arose, there would be no confusion. • Acts 4:12 “salvation in no other…no other name given….”
Have you captured the revelation? • Jn 14:8 & 9 “Lord, show us….He who sees Me sees the Father…” • Hb 1:3 “and He (Jesus) is the …exact representation of His (the Father’s) nature…” • Col 1:5 “ And He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” • Col 2:9 “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.”
The challenge… • In this world of “shaking,” is your heart troubled? • To Whom and to what is your heart anchored?
The encouragement… • Jn 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give it to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
