Hijri Calendar 1438 H The Hijri calendar presented below is based on the concept of ‘Conjunction’. Conjunction occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth and the center of the Sun, the center of Moon and the center of Earth are in “ONE PLANE”. The Conjunction marks the end of the Hijri month. The next Hijri month commences on the “next DAY” of the “Conjunction DAY”. For example, if the Conjunction occurred on Thursday, the next month begins on Friday. It is important to note that, for the commencement of the new month the “time of Conjunction” is not the criterion and should not be applied. This is important as the calculation of the time of the day is totally and independently governed by the rotation of the Earth and the consequent apparent position of the sun in relation to a particular spot on Earth. To simplify, an observer on Earth divides his day and sets his clock on the basis of the Sun in relation to his Midnight Meridian. Conjunction dates and times (UT) are tabulated in Nautical Almanacs and websites for the entire year or years in advance. Moon Moon Sun Sun Moon Sun Earth Earth Earth The Centers of Earth, Moon and Sun are in one plane and in One Straight Line Next
Solar Eclipse Eclipse occurs when the center of Sun, the center of Moon, and the center of Earth are in One Straight Line, and the moon is between the Sun and Earth. It is thus conjunction and eclipse same time. Sun Sun Sun Earth Moon Earth Moon Earth The Centers of Earth, Moon and Sun are in one plane and in One Straight Line Next
In the calendar below the “Day of Conjunction” is used for the purpose of termination of the current Hijri month. Moon Phases : The various phases of the Moon along with the Hijri month dates are just for the purpose of demonstrating the waxing and the waning cycle of the moon in a Hijri month. It shows a regular pattern which is typical for a 29 day month and also typical for 30 day month at a particular location on the Earth. In this calendar the pattern is for Makkah. Please note, the shape of these phases will not be applicable world wide as each place will have its own pattern. Brother Ali Manikfan has been making observations for the last 40 years from South India and the Maldives Islands and by looking at the Moon on a particular day is able not only to advise the date of that particular Hijri month but also is able to indicate if that particular month will be a 29 day month or 30 day month. Next
It will be interesting to note that this phenomenon and this regular phase pattern is only possible for a Hijri Calendar as this is the only lunar calendar which has remained unchanged since its inception.I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to Brother Ali Manikfan, for the inspiration and guidance provided through his website ‘Hijricalendar.com’. Almost by accident we were introduced to the most sought personality in Saudi Arabia and in the astronomy world, that is Dr Fadhl Noor Ahmed. He obtained his Ph. D. in Astronomy from UK and is responsible for setting up the Department of Astronomy in Saudi Arabia. He has many firsts to his credit which include but not limited to, the installation of the first telescope in Saudi Arabia, prepared 1300 to 1429 Hijri Calendar based on conjunction principle, calculation of Prayer times, etc. etc. the list continues. He is responsible for correcting our definition of the conjunction, which is reflected in this edition of 1438H Calendar. I must convey my sincere thanks to Br. Abdullateef who actually introduced Br. Manikfan and the Conjunction concept to me. Next
My colleagues Syed Mutaharuddin Haqqani, Hani M. Al Sangedy and Mohamed Zia Ul Haq must be commended for their sincere efforts and assistance in the production of this calendar.I will be grateful to the readers and viewers for their comments and corrections of errors/omissions if any.May Allah be kind to us all.Wassalam Capt Farhat N Siddiqui Main Menu

MT MONT – ULCC Supertanker Seawise Giant, later Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, Knock Nevis, Oppama, and finally Mont, was a ULCC supertanker and the longest ship ever built. She possessed the greatest deadweight tonnage ever recorded. Fully laden, her displacement was 657,019 tonnes (646,642 long tons; 724,239 short tons), the heaviest ship of any kind, and with a laden draft of 24.6 m (81 ft), she was incapable of navigating the English Channel, the Suez Canal or the Panama Canal. Overall, she was generally considered the largest ship ever built. She was sunk during the Iran–Iraq War, but was later salvaged and restored to service. She was last used as a floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) moored off the coast of Qatar in the Persian Gulf at the Al Shaheen Oil Field. The vessel was sold to Indian ship breakers, and renamed Mont for her final journey in December 2009. After clearing Indian customs, she was sailed to, and intentionally beached at, Alang, Gujarat, India, to be broken up for scrap. Seawise Giant was ordered in 1974 and delivered in 1979 by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. at their Oppama shipyard in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan as a 418,611 ton ULCC.Seawise Giant was damaged and sunkduring the 1980–1988 Iran–Iraq War by an Iraqi Air Force attack while anchored off Larak Island on 14 May 1988 and carrying Iranian crude oil. The ship was struck by parachute bombs. Fires ignited aboard the ship and blazed out of control, and she sank in the shallow waters off the coast of Larak Island, Iran. She was declared a total loss and was laid up.Shortly after the Iran-Iraq war ended, Norman International bought the wreckage of the ship and raised her and repaired her. She was renamed Happy Giant after the repairs. These repairs were done at the Keppel Company shipyard in Singapore after towing her from the Persian Gulf. She entered service in October 1991 as Happy Giant.Jørgen Jahre bought the tanker in 1991 for US$39 million and renamed her Jahre Viking. From 1991 to 2004, she was owned by Loki Stream AS and flew the Norwegian flag. In 2004, she was purchased by First Olsen Tankers Pte. Ltd., renamed Knock Nevis, and converted into a permanently moored storage tanker in the Qatar Al Shaheen oil field in the Persian Gulf. Back
ORE BRASIL – Largest Ore Carrier (Bulk) • MS Ore Brasil, previously known as Vale Brasil is a very large ore carrier owned by the Brazilian mining company Vale. She is the first of seven 400,000-ton very large ore carriers (VLOC) ordered by Vale fromDaewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea and twelve from Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries in China, which are designed to carry iron ore from Brazil to Asia along the Cape route around South Africa.] While close to the specifications of Chinamax, these ships are generally referred to as Valemax vessels by Vale. They are the largest bulk carriers ever built. • The overall length of Ore Brasil is 362.0 metres (1,187.7 ft), making her one of the longest ships currently in service. The breadth and depth of her hull are 65.0 metres (213.3 ft) and 30.4 metres (99.7 ft), respectively, giving her a gross tonnage of 198,980. • Ore Brasil has seven cargo holds with a combined gross volume of 219,980 cubic metres and net tonnage of 67,993. Her deadweight tonnage is 402,347 tons. When carrying a full load of iron ore, equal to around 11,150 trucks,] her draught is 23 metres (75.5 ft). Like other very large ore carriers of her size, Ore Brasil is limited to only a few deepwater ports in Brazil, Europe and China. • Ore Brasil is propelled by a single MAN B&W 7S80ME-C8 two-stroke low-speed diesel engine directly coupled to a fixed-pitch propeller. The main engine, which has a maximum output of 29,260 kilowatts (39,240 hp) at 78 rpm, burns 96.7 tons of heavy fuel oil per day. However, due to the large size of the vessel the emissions per cargo ton-mile are very low, making Ore Brasil in fact one of the most efficient long-distance dry bulk carriers in service, and for this reason the ship received the Clean Ship award of 2011 in the Norwegian shipping exhibition Nor-Shipping. Vale has reported 35 % drop in emissions per ton of cargo in comparison to older ships. Her service speed is 15.4 knots (28.5 km/h; 17.7 mph). Back

MV Becrux – Largest Live stock carrier • MV Becrux Controversy • The live stock carrier came under the light of controversy on account of death of around 900 cattle right during the vessel’s maiden journey from Australia to Saudi Arabia. Following this incident, a lot of questions were raised about the ventilation aspects in these livestock carriers and the preservation of the lives of the cattle expected to be carried in ship in the days and years to come. Incidentally, the ship was given a complete check with respect to its pens and other facilities for the purpose of cattle transportation before it entered active operational duty. • Present Scenario • At present, there is no ship that rivals the facilities offered by the cattle carrier MV Becrux. The company however is expected to launch two more ships on par with the facilities offered by the cattle ship within a time-span of two years. With a budget of US $ 250 million, these two ships are expected to have a cattle carrying capacity of 18,000 sheep and goats or alternatively, 75,000 cattle. • The launch of these two ships will help revolutionise the cattle class ship industry with better and advanced reinforcements to meet the ever-increasing demands. Ocean Research Vessel • A research vessel (RV or R/V) is a ship or boat designed and/or equipped to carry out research at sea. Research vessels carry out a number of roles. Some of these roles can be combined into a single vessel but others require a dedicated vessel. Due to the demanding nature of the work, research vessels are often constructed around an icebreaker hull, allowing them to operate in polar waters. • The research ship had origins in the early voyages of exploration. By the time of James Cook's Endeavour, the essentials of what today we would call a research ship are clearly apparent. In 1766, the Royal Society hired Cook to travel to the Pacific Ocean to observe and record the transit of Venus across the Sun. The Endeavour was a sturdy boat, well designed and equipped for the ordeals she would face, and fitted out with facilities for her "research personnel", Joseph Banks. And, as is common with contemporary research vessels, Endeavour carried out more than one kind of research, including comprehensive hydrographic survey work. • Some other notable early research vessels were HMS Beagle, RV Calypso, HMS Challenger, USFC Albatross, and the Endurance and Terra Nova. • The names of early research vessels have been used to name later research vessels, as well as Space Shuttles. • Hydrographic survey / Oceanographic research / Fisheries research / Naval research • / Polar research / Oil exploration Back
USS George H.W. Bush World largest Air Craft Carrier • USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy.[She is named for the 41st President of the United States and former Director of Central Intelligence George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. Bush's call sign is Avenger, after the TBM Avenger aircraft flown by then-Lieutenant George Bush in World War II. Construction began in 2003 at the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard's Dry Dock 12, the largest in the western hemisphere. She was completed in 2009 at a cost of $6.2 billion and her home port is Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. • Bush stretches 1,092 feet and displaces over 100,000 tons, making her one of the world’s largest warships (though she is slightly shorter than USS Enterprise. Her top speed exceeds 30 knots; powered with two nuclear reactors, she can operate for more than 20 years without refueling. • Several features differentiate CVN-77 from other ships in the Nimitz class. • The ship was assigned to Carrier Strike Group Two for her first deployment. Under the command of Rear Admiral Nora Tyson, George H.W. Bush, Carrier Air Wing Eight and the four ships of her group departed on her first deployment on 15 May 2011. They sailed across the Atlantic to Britain to participate in Exercise Saxon Warrior, held in the Western Approaches and culminating in a so-called 'Thursday War'.She then moved towards Portsmouth, England on 27 May, anchoring adjacent to Stokes Bay through 31 May, because she was too large to enter the harbor, and the naval base did not have sufficient nuclear berths for the carrier to moor alongside. The carrier arrived at Naples, Italy on 10 June 2011. • On 23 August 2011, she made her 20,000th arrested fixed wing aircraft recovery (landing) while operating in the Arabian Sea during Operation Enduring Freedom flight operations. This milestone was accomplished by LCDR Chris R. Swanson who was flying an E-2C Hawkeye Airborne early warning and control aircraft assigned to VAW-124 (Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 124). • The carrier returned to Norfolk on 10 December 2011, following a seven-month deployment supporting operations with the U.S. Navy's 5th and 6th fleets.
