  2. Greetings! I know that I haven’t had the opportunity to introduce myself to most of you, but I look forward to being able to meet with you in the near future. As a brief intro: • My name is Lauren Swihart • I’m a graduate of CSU (B.F.A.) and of Regis University’s teacher licensure program • My experience in education includes roles as a teacher, substitute, and tutor in neighborhood schools and charter schools, low- and high- SES communities, grades PreK-8th, and in the subjects of general education, language arts, ELL, art, and Spanish

Our Reading Classroom Activities • Phonograms • Oral Phonogram Review (OPR) Teacher shows flashcards, students practice saying sounds • Written Phonogram Review (WPR) Teacher gives sounds, students write phonogram • Thursday: Phonogram Test (written) • Spelling • Monday - Wednesday: Introduce 10 new words/week, practice sounding them out, and discuss markings/rules (why they are spelled the way they are) • Thursday and Friday: Activities/review for new words and those introduced the previous week • Friday: Test on words introduced the previous week

Our Reading Classroom Activities (cont.) • Guided Reading (decodables) Introduced and practiced in class, and used for fluency activities; practiced again at home and returned with one completed slip per book • Read Aloud (picture books) Used to introduce/practice comprehension skills • Fluency/Comprehension Lessons, Practice Activities, and Assessments These include games, centers, group activities, individual practice, one-on-one instruction, online practice, songs, creative projects, etc.

Homework • Daily • 20 minutes of reading (recorded in reading log) • Practice writing spelling words – please make sure your child sounds these out as he/she writes them • Spelling words are also on SpellingCity.com/lswihart for additional practice (optional but highly suggested) • Sight words (to begin after Fall break) • Phonograms: please check the AA 1st Grade website for resources • Additional Homework • As needed, will be sent home in homework packet

Homework (cont.) • Weekly Homework Packet • To be sent home each Wednesday and returned each Monday • Contents: 3 decodable books, supply of reading slips, spelling words, sight words, extra fluency/handwriting/spelling practice • Test Dates • Monday: Sight words (5 new each week) • Thursday: Phonograms (20) • Friday: Spelling words from previous week (10)

Website • AA Website -> First Grade -> Ms. Swihart • Updated periodically • Spelling lists updated weekly • I regularly make small adjustments to routines/instruction to meet the unique needs of my students. Please check back for any changes • Technology and Resources: Look for links/downloads that will be helpful in enhancing your child’s reading education outside the classroom
