  1. SuperCDMS SNOLAB Project Dan Bauer, Project Manager Fermilab, June 14, 2010

  2. Overview of CDMS Projects

  3. SuperCDMS SNOLAB • Aim for x10 further improvement in sensitivity over Soudan • Science goal: WIMP-nucleon cross section sensitivity of 3E-46 cm2 • New experimental setup at SNOLAB in Canada • X3 deeper, so no cosmic neutron background • Whole lab is class-2000 cleanroom • New setup must have lower backgrounds from radioactivity • Goal is to build 100 kg of Ge detectors • These will be of the iZIP (interleaved, double-sided) design • Each detector will be 4” diameter, ~1.3” thick, with mass ~1.5 kg • That means building 75-100 detectors (CDMS II used 30)

  4. Schematic of SuperCDMS SNOLAB

  5. First step – R&D, CD-0 and MIE • R&D for FY2010-FY2011 • Submitted FWPs to DOE • FNAL – Cryogenics, Warm Electronics, Shielding designs • SLAC – Detector development • LBNL – Cold electronics • CD-0 and MIE • Requested CD-0 from DOE by summer 2010 • Requested $19.9M MIE for FY2012

  6. Budget and Schedule

  7. Where do we stand in project planning? • Detailed list of specifications/milestones • http://cdms.berkeley.edu/wiki/doku.php?id=snolab:snolab_milestones • Good start on the WBS • http://cdms.berkeley.edu/wiki/doku.php?id=snolab:snolab_wbs • Project Tools • Budget as Excel database and Pivot Tables • FastTrack Schedule (not yet resource loaded) • DOCDB for documentation • http://supercdms-docdb.fnal.gov:8080/cgi-bin/ListTopics

  8. Missing Elements • Have never done CD documentation before • Risk Registry • Alternatives Analysis • Hazards Analysis • Acquisition Strategy • ES&H Analysis • These things have been discussed in our proposals but not as formal documents.

  9. Project Planning at FNAL • First meeting with project team Apr 29 • Homework assignments • Develop a list of project contacts at each institution. Request a listserv for project management (and later another one that include L2 managers). • Project listserv done. L2 managers still to be identified • Put together an overview of the project with a schematic showing systems. Provide a top-down schedule. • Done • Look into requirements for project engineer • Contact DOE site office to identify who will be responsible for SuperCDMS SNOLAB • Set up area in the Directorate server for SuperCDMS • Find out plans for migrating DOCDB to Sharepoint

  10. The role of SLAC • SLAC will manage the Detector and Software Systems • This is about 2/3 of the Project • They will assist in overall project management (Eduardo do Coutoe Silva as Deputy Project Manager) • Already have substantial project help available • How can we best work together? • Plan to use shared project software • Primavera for schedule/budget, Sharepoint for docs? • Joint project meetings • Monthly for now, weekly after CD-0 • Let’s agree on a meeting time • Monthly, third Wednesday, 10am Central is a bit early for SLAC.
