  2. Positive Effects of Technology in the Classroom • Students now have access to new and different types of information, as well as more information. • Learning is more creative. • Students are able to communicate their knowledge to teachers, students in other classrooms, or students around the world. • Technology creates a different kind of learning for students • Technology changes the dynamic of the classroom from teacher-centered to student-centered

  3. Negative Effects of Technology in the Classroom • Not all students have access to the same kinds of technology outside of the classroom. • Technology can fail or change. • Technology can be distracting to students if used in an inefficient way. • Technology within the classroom can distract students from the actual knowledge. • Students attention spans are much shorter because of the amount of information they are being given at any moment in time

  4. new technologies being used in classrooms

  5. Smart Boards • Smart Boards are interactive boards that are connected to the computer. • Certain programs are used in connection with the Smart Board. • Teachers and Students can make interactive presentations to make learning more interactive and interesting.

  6. Doc Camera • Projects documents on to the board do students are able to see. • Allows teachers to go through directions visually. • Can project examples of students work.

  7. Utilizing Technology to Enhance Learning

  8. Webquest • The teacher preselects a website with information regarding content in the class. • The teacher provides a worksheet with questions that can be found throughout the website’s content. • Student’s then spend time working through the questions as well as figuring out how to navigate through a website. • Examples: • Civil Rights Webquest: http://www.eslprintables.com/vocabulary_worksheets/peace_and_solidarity/civil_rights/Civil_Rights_Webquest_233412/ • Water Webquest: http://www.kcwa.com/webquests/3rdGradeWebquestWorksheet.pdf

  9. Prezi • An alternative to a PowerPoint • Breaks us the monotony of a lecture as well as providing a space for a presentation, not simply slides. • A teacher can use pre-made Prezi presentations to get a point across • Or a teacher can create their own in order to inform students of a topic. • Examples: • http://prezi.com/o1uclaxwhoow/turn-on-the-poetry-by-presentacionesbiz/ • http://prezi.com/wxyivaj-4yoq/martin-luther-king-jr/

  10. Social Media • Social media sites that could be used within the classroom: • Facebook • Twitter • Instagram • Wordpress Blogs • Students are efficient in social media, so this could be used in very creative ways. • Examples: • Create a Twitter Account of a character in a book or a person in history. • Use Facebook in order to create a space to answer questions or discuss class assignments. • Create a Blog for students to utilize for a different kind of writing.

  11. So, What’s the Point?

  12. Technology should aid education not distract from it • Technology can be used in incredible ways to further and enhance student’s learning. • It simply needs to be integrated seamlessly into the curriculum of a classroom. • When it inhibits students from learning and education, it should be reconsidered. • Technology has its place in a classroom, but sometimes things need to be done the “old-fashion” way.
