  2. Police Shift Work • Police officers in the UK have been required to work shifts since the beginning of the Police Service in the mid 1800's • 24/7 service necessarily needed • In the long term, there is risk of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and psychoneurotic diseases

  3. Police Shift Work • As a consequence of the Police (Health and Safety) Regulations 1999, police officers are now fully covered by Part 1 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • Therefore Police Forces have an obligation to minimise the adverse effects shift work may imply

  4. Police Work Shift • Police managers thus need to analyse the demand for calls for service from the public; on the right is a demand graph

  6. Police Shift Work • Police Managers should aim to: • Minimise permanent nights • Minimise sequence of nights • Consider shorter night shifts • Avoid quick change-overs • Some free weekends • Rotate forward
