  1. Jean-François Piollé (Ifremer/CERSAT) Ian S.Robinson (NOCS)

  2. Medspiration : UHR L4 • Extension of Medspiration over 2009-2010 to serve existing services or user requirements : TV5 « beach » service, SMOS, SAR validation,…. • Based on Odyssea • Re-analysis over Medspiration era (2005-2009) scheduled for end 2009 • New windows opened (Great Barrier Reef, Brazil, South-Africa) • ftp://ftp.ifremer.fr/ifremer/medspiration/data/l4uhrsstfnd/eurdac/ • Free and anonymous access

  3. Medspiration : L2P MSG/SEVIRI (10km, 3-hourly) ENVISAT/AATSR (1km, 14-15 orbits/day) SAF O&SI NAR for AVHRR18 (2km, 2 passes/day) 94 000 files produced,about 40 Tb

  4. Match-up database About 6.000.000 matchups (98% drifters, 2% profilers) Contains only Medspiration L2P (incl. AMSRE/TMI/AVHRR over Atlantic until early 2007, AATSR global since 2007) • Application : improving the AATSR Error Statistics • Use of the MDB by AATSR validation scientist to improve SSES : • uses the difference between nadir and dual view SST products as a basis for setting the confidence value and hence stratifying the error estimates • target is to establish a means for automatically checking SSES

  5. TV5Monde http://www.tv5.org/TV5Site/meteo/temperature-des-mers.php

  6. Access to tools & data • European data archive • ftp://ftp.ifremer.fr/ifremer/medspiration/data/ • OpenDAP : http://www.ifremer.fr/cgi-bin/nph-dods/data/satellite/medspiration • Medspiration (http://www.medspiration.org) • HR-DDS : http://www.hrdds.net/ • Match-up Database : http://www.medspiration.org/tools/mdb/ • Google Earth : http://www.medspiration.org/data_access/kml/ • Help desk : fpaf@ifremer.fr

  7. Dissemination • About 660 Gb/month (compressed => ~15 Tb) • Approx 90 users/month • Main users: • Operational agencies and met offices • DK : 35% • UK : 43% • USA : 15.6 % • France : 4.5%

  8. Data usage (1) • Multi-sensor analyses • Mersea (Ifremer) => GMES • OSTIA (UKMet) => GMES • Daily, global • Use all L2P datastreams for merging • Use AATSR as reference for large-scale bias correction of all sensors • Use MDB for sensor error characterization Ifremer global analysis for Mersea OSTIA global analysis • also : Mersea High resolution Mediterranean Sea (CNR, to be used operationally in future by the Mediterranean Ocean Observing Network - MOON), • and : High latitudes (DMI/MetNo, used by the operational high resolution NWP system)

  9. Data usage (2) • Coastal oceanography applications • More and more modelers use satellite-derived maps to validate or force their high-resolution models in coastal waters • Validation of hydrodynamical model outputs (Ifremer) • Validation of biological models

  10. Data usage (3) • Coastal oceanography applications • Combination and monitoring of SST, Chl and turbidity, especially with the environmental change (climate, regulation of the human wastes in coastal waters) drives many applications of Medspiration data • Study of environmental conditions favourable to the laminaria forest (Ifremer) • Growth Model of mussels in Mont-Saint Michel Bay (Brittany-Normandy), one of the main sites of mussels (Mytilus edulis) farming, in France (local production : 10 000 tons / year, french production : 60 000 tons / year) Isle of Batz Prediction of laminaria distribution Final whole weight of mussels, after 19 month of growth simulated from satellite temperature and chlorophyll, over the whole bay
