Magnetic Fields • Magnetic fields are areas where an object exhibits a magnetic influence. • The fields affect neighboring objects along things called magnetic field lines. • A magnetic object can attract or push away another magnetic object.
Magnetic Poles • Magnetic poles are the points where the magnetic field lines begin and end. • Field lines converge or come together at the poles. • At Earth’s North and South Poles the Field Lines come together.
Earth’s Magnetic Field • The Earth acts like a huge magnet, creating a huge magnetic field. • Earth’s outer liquid core is filled with iron (Fe). • Helps protect us from space radiation.
The Dynamo Effect • The flowing metal in the outer core creates the dynamo effect. • Dynamos create large magnetic fields The region of magnetic protection is called the magnetosphere.
