  1. CH 4 SEC 1 INTRODUCTION TO ATOMS

  2. GOAL/PURPOSE • PREVIOUSLY, STUDENTS LEARNED THAT AN ATOM IS THE BASIC PARTICLE FROM WHICH ALL ELEMENTS ARE MADE. NOW STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE THE STRUCTURE OF THE ATOM AND HOW IT WAS DISCOVERED.

  3. THE ATOM INVISIBLE TO HUMAN EYE

  4. What is a ATOM? • ATOM- IS THE SMALLEST PARTICLE OF AN ELEMENT. • KEY- YOU CANT SEE AN ATOM. • KEY- THE ATOMIC THEORY GREW AS A SERIES OF MODELS THAT DEVELOPED FROM EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE. • KEY- AS MORE EVIDENCE WAS COLLECTED, THE THEORY AND MODELS WERE REVISED

  5. COPY AND LABEL a model of THE ATOM

  6. What are atoms made of? • ELECTRONS- ARE NEGATIVELY CHARGED PARTICLES THAT SURROUND THE NUCLEUS(TINY) • NUCLEUS- CENTER OF THE ATOM CONSISTING OF PROTONS AND NEUTRONS • PROTONS- POSITIVELY CHARGED PARTICLES IN THE NUCLEUS • NEUTRONS- ARE NO CHARGE BUT SIMILAR MASS TO PROTON. Located in the nucleus.

  7. HOW MANY ARE YOU MADE OF?

  8. What is at the center of the atom? • KEY- AT THE CENTER OF THE ATOM IS A TINY, MASSIVE NUCLEUS CONTAINING PROTONS AND NEUTRONS . • KEY- SURROUNDING THE NUCLEUS IS A CLOUDLIKE REGION OF MOVING ELECTRONS. Also called the ‘electron cloud’…

  9. COPY and label- Electrons surround the nucleus of protons and neutrons

  10. COPY and label - Another model of an atom

  11. Name five elements from the periodic table? • KEY- ATOMS ARE AMAZINGLY SMALL. THE TINIEST SPECK OF DUST MAY CONTAIN 10MILLION BILLION ATOMS! • ATOMIC NUMBER- THE NUMBER OF PROTONS IN THE NUCLEUS OF AN ATOM. • KEY- EVERY ELEMENT HAS A DIFFERENT NUMBER OF PROTONS. The number tells us how many protons are in the element • EX- CARBON ATOMIC# IS 6 HOW MANY PROTONS? OXYGEN ATOMIC# IS 8-PROTONS? IRON AT #26- PROTONS?

  12. Check these sites for more on the periodic table • http://periodictable.com/ • http://www.chemicalelements.com/ • http://science.howstuffworks.com/periodic-table-videos-playlist.htm

  13. KEY- Everything in the universe is made of a combination of these elements, including you

  14. Choose 5 words and define

  15. WRITE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS from text ch4 sec 1 • 1-A • 2A,B,C • http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/atoms/
