Introduction • The Student Economic Review, now in its 24th year of publication, is one of the only Economics journals in the world produced entirely by students. • Every year the SER endeavors to produce a high quality economic journal • Referenced in “Freakonomics” highlighting the exposure the Review and it’s writers (you guys) receive. • It draws together the Economists and Entrepreneurs of tomorrow in an atmosphere of discussion and debate

  10. Guidelines • Essays should be between 2500 – 3000 words • Essay template and referencing instructions provided on SER website • Essays are submitted through www.turnitin.com

General Essay Writing Guidelines • Handwriting/format • Keeping to time limit for exams • Evidence of understanding and research • Introduction • Pose/reformulate question • Avoid waffle/flowery introductions • Body of essay – development of argument • Logical succession to arguments • Referencing (Harvard method) • Consistent style • Conclusion – pulls essay together, summary of thoughts and give opinion where appropriate • Scholars – critically engage with material • Self edit or get others to do it for you

Essay Topics • What are we looking for? “Clear and insightful writing which aims to examine and explore the possibilities of the economic world.” • This year, new scope for: • Contemporary economics, current financial crisis (and recovery?!), going the extra mile on projects. • Last year – behavioral economics - “Is homoeconomicus dead?” – best essay • Several essays that called the fundamentals of the field into question. • Other side of the coin – Return to the basics? A defense of economic theory be it industrial, classical, micro, marco, Keynesian etc. – never been so much new data that could be used to support a theory.

Tips! • Read past editions online (2009 edition will be uploaded by the end of the week) • Familiarise yourself with layout • Discuss areas of interest with lecturers – very supportive • Come to our debates and events • Exploit the extended Christmas break • Future Scholars? – Rework schol essays for submission (Economy of Ireland?) • Get the recognition your work deserves • This could be you guys next year!
