  1. Dimensional Analysis & Scientific Notation

  2. Dimensional Analysis Conversion factors - ratios of equivalent values 1 gram = 1000 milligrams 1 g or 1000 mg 1000 mg 1 g

  3. 60 sec = 1 min. 60 sec or 1 min. 1 min. 60 sec What would the conversion factors be for years and days? 365 days or 1 year 1 year 365 days

  4. Dimensional Analysis 1.) Write down given number and unit 2.) Write down “x” and a line 3.) Put given unit on side of line so it will cancel and the desired unit on the other side (may take more than 1 step) 4.) Fill in appropriate numerical relationship 5.) Multiply the top and divide by the bottom

  5. Example #1 • How many seconds are there in 1 year? 365 days x ____ 24 hr 60 min. x _____ x _____ 1 year day 1 hr 1 1 year 60 sec. x _____ 1 min = 31536000 sec.

  6. Example #2 - How many inches are there in 85.6 cm? (1in = 25.4mm) 10 mm 1 in 85.6cm x _____ x _____ cm mm 1 25.4 = 33.7 in.

  7. Example #3 - How many fluid ounces are there in 2.0 gallons? (1gall = 4 qts, 1 qt = 2 pints, 1 pint = 2 cups, 1 cup = 8 fl. oz.) 4 qts 2 pt 2.0 gall x _____ x _____ gal qt. 1 1 2 cup x _____ 8 fl. oz. x _____ pt. cup 1 1 = 256 fl. oz.

  8. Scientific Notation 1.) Move decimal after first whole number while counting the number of places you moved. 2.) Rewrite number with x 10 following it. 3.) Add exponent to 10 based on number of places you moved decimal - exponent is (-) if you moved right and (+) if you moved left.
