  2. Honours and Awards • Anya Waite elected Member-at-large of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography! • Carlos M. Duarte - honorary doctorate, Utrecht Univ. • Prof. Chari appointed Associate Editor of Continental Shelf Research. • Ms. Gabrielle Cummins: AMSA Award for Best Honour’s presentation. • Ms. Amy Newman. Best student presentation AMS meeting.

  3. MOU UWA-CSIC • CSIC - largest research organisation in Spain (14,000 staff, 6,000 staff researchers). • MOU: Marine Sciences, Plant Sciences, Astrophysics, Computing-intensive sciences. • Components: Jointly supervised Ph.D. students, exchanges of personnel, sabbaticals, joint appointments. • see http://www.csic.es/web/guest/areas-cientificas

  5. Grants and programs • NERP - 800,000 (3 years) OI leaders: Jessica Meeuwig & Gary Kendrick • WAMSI 2 - bid to dredging node, OI leaders: Gary Kendrick & Greg Ivey • WAIMOS - 6 million/3 yrs. OI leader: Chari • Gorgon Barrow Island conservation project - one OI bid to step 2 - OI leader: Shaun Collin. • ANNiMS - 2 springboard projects lead by UWA (Chari & Jessica) - OI leader: Chari. Congratulations to leaders and thanks to all!

  6. New document on Institutes approved by Senate • . • Staff joining Institutes need to agree formally on their affiliation to the Institutes with their Heads of Schools and Deans, which should agree for them to conduct part of their research at the Institute (Deans charged with doing so). • A postgraduate member need be appointed to the Board of the Institutes, including the OI. Elections to be conducted.

  7. Buildings • Watermans: progress made, plans advanced and iterated through users groups. • IOMRC: First cut at possible distribution. Space available < 60% of requested. Need to use limited space in the best interest of OI (i.e. avoid duplications, enhanced capacities above present, attract new members). Shaun Collin leads this with participation from various members and assistance from Christine Shervington.

  8. Center of Excellence on Ocean Solutions • An opportunity to develop a Center of Excellence on Ocean Solutions. A first draft document to be produced by September. • Seed money to develop this from VC

  9. Training on Ocean Solutions • Framing undergraduate opportunities and trajectories on ocean sciences and technology at UWA (need info. from staff). • Short professional courses. • Master Program - research and course-based (professionals). • Offer postgraduate courses on Ocean Solutions that complement existing programs. • Short course on safe boating and diving best practices (mandatory) - OI leader: Euan Harvey.

  10. Professional development workshops • Effective presentation on meetings (poster, orals). • Scientific writing • International Mobility (1 of 2) • Effective communication and interactions with the media (in the fall, Tony Malkovic).

  11. Internal communication tools • OI Facebook (for internal, member use only). • News (backbone); Buildings; New members; Awards; Grants; Events; Seminars; links to media reports on OI • Information for students. • Blogs (director and members). • Archive (newsletter, annual reports, pdf’s of papers) • Photographs (field work, workshops, events, etc.) contributing to an OI Gallery. • Links (CSIRO, AIMS, Dept Fisheries, WAMSI, DEC, etc.)

  12. Internal communication tools • Google Docs for collaborative work and collection of information (for internal, member use only). News (backbone) • Publications • Grants • Students (Ph.D. and Master) • An OI accounted created. All will receive a link and can access files clicking on the link and edit the document.
