  1. Blood Vessels

  2. Arteries An artery is a vessel that carries blood away from the heart An artery has a thick muscular wall unlike a vein They have a thick wall as there is high pressure coming from the heart going through the arteries. • When you feel a pulse in your body that’s the blood going through your arteries.

  3. Carotid Artery Disease You have two common carotid arteries on both sides of your neck, They each divide into internal and external carotid arteries Build up of waxy substance called plaque The internal carotid arteries supplies oxygen-rich blood to your brain. The external carotid arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to your face, scalp, and neck When there is a build up of plaque this can cause a stroke A stroke occurs when the blood flow is cut of from your brain This is an artery with a build up of plaque

  4. Veins Veins carry blood to the heart 64%of our blood is carried in the veins. Veins are located in your muscles Veins can expand to hold large amounts of blood As veins are narrow, they use valves to build up pressure, allowing the blood to move in one direction to the heart also stopping it flowing backwards. • When we move our body we squeeze and bend our veins, this pushes the blood along them

  5. Capillaries Capillaries are tiny, they are just one cell thick Blood is transported from arteries to veins through the capillaries Unlike arteries or veins they are permeable Plasma goes through them carrying useful substances Capillaries are known as exchange vessels as, exchanges of materials between blood and living tissues take place through there permeable thin walls • Capillaries are that small that red blood cells can only travel through them in single file

  6. Blood Supply

  7. The arteries carry the blood away from the heart, the capillaries carry the blood away from the arteries to the veins, and the veins carry the blood back to the heart • Aorta comes out the left atrium • Vena Cave goes into the right atrium • Hepatic artery vein are located in the liver along with the hepatic portal vein • Renal artery supplies blood to the kidneys • Renal vein takes blood away from the kidneys • Measenteric artery supplies blood to the intestines
