  2. What was the Magna Carta? • The Magna Carta was a collection of 37 English laws – Some old and some new. • The name is Latin for 'Great Charter'. • A charter is a written document that defines the rights of a group of people.

  3. When and Where was it signed? • The Magna Carta was signed by King John in a meadow at Runnymede  in Egham, Surrey, South England on the 15th of June, 1215 • Once signed by the king, the Magna Carta became a list of promises that he was supposed to keep.

  4. Who made it and Why? • The charter is considered to be the beginning of constitutional government in England. The Magna Carta demonstrated that the power of the king could be limited by a written grant. • The content of the Magna Carta was drafted by Archbishop Stephen Langton and the most powerful Barons of England.
