  1. Welcome to Year 5 The Year 5 team are: Mr Cantle, Mr Winstanley, Miss Chapman, Mr Laws and Miss Duncan

  2. Welcome to Year 5 Aim of our chat We will talk about the following: • The Year 5 Curriculum • A look at an example timetable • Homework • E-Safety – use of the internet • Parent consultations • Parent helpers • Year 5 expectations

  3. Maths • The units covered in each term are – four rules, money and real life problems, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion, handling data, using a calculator, shape and measures. • Word problems/real life situations • School website – www.histonimpington-jun.cambs.sch.uk • Some information about maths and links to good websites. • On-going information will be put onto the website.

  4. English • Based around the use of high quality texts. • Reading Diaries – Encourage children to read aloud and discuss their books to someone at home, at least 3 times a week. Children are also expected to write their own comments about what they’ve read. • Writing – read through work, edit and improve. • Spelling – boosting the profile across the school.

  5. International Primary Curriculum • IPC • Growth Mindsets • Go With The Flow • Mission to Mars • Fairgrounds • AD 900 Non-European Society (Aztecs, Mayans, Incas etc.)

  7. Homework • Homework is set on a weekly basis. • Alternating between General Homework and Maths. (Eg. One week English, or General Homework, next week Maths). • Spellings will be sent home 3 times a week. • We expect homework to be completed by the same day the following week. • If a child gets all homework in on time they receive a homework certificate at the end of each term. • PLEASE REMEMBER READING and sign journals at least 3 times a week.

  8. E-Safety • Using the internet responsibly- 13 years old • Online etiquette • Dangers of the internet, mobile phones, e-mail, instant messaging (msm), social networking sites • Google Apps for Education

Parents Consultations • Consultations are scheduled for: • Autumn • Spring • To make an appointment, sign up initially in the hall and then on the list outside the classroom. • It is important that we see all parents. • If you have any queries or concerns please don’t feel you have to wait until parents consultations.

  10. Parent Helpers • YES PLEASE!!!! • Importance of safeguarding. • DBS checks needed. • Readers in the afternoons.

  11. Year 5 Expectations • Independence • Responsibility for own actions • Rewards • Praise – E.g. Marble in jar for whole class reward • Star cards – house points • HIP tickets / P.E HIP tickets / HIP ticket for PSHE theme • Sanctions • Two warnings/reminders • Take work to another seat / classroom. • Timeout room – not always a sanction

  12. A few helpful reminders • PE kit should be brought in on a Monday and taken home on a Friday. We also have an indoor lesson and they needs shorts for this. • All items of the PE kit need labelling, along with ALL SCHOOL SWEATSHIRTS. • Lost property box is located in the Year 3 / 4 corridor. This is cleared termly. • PE T-shirts should be in the correct house colour, NO FOOTBALL SHIRTS. • Tie back long hair • No jewellery – earrings need to be taken out for P.E or can be taped if newly pierced. • No nail varnish • Water bottles need to be labelled and kept water tight. • Each child should have a recorder • Remember 20p on a Friday for Fruit Tuck Shop.

A few helpful reminders • We need sensible sized school bags. • Handwriting pens and pencils are available in the classrooms. • Please use a black pen or pencil for homework (no biros). • We prefer children to use the pens and pencils provided. If children have their own pencil cases, they can use them occasionally in the classroom – please make sure everything is named. • Recorders will be needed in Year 5 to continue the learning from Year 4.

  14. Things to look forward to! • Ely trip (reply slips due tomorrow please) • Year 5 performance • Camping • And…some fantastic progress!
