  3. Getting to the Core of Learning Common Core Standards • National Standards vs. State Standards • Curriculum Integration • Higher Expectations • Utilizing technology to conduct research on a variety of topics and citing sources • Greater Depth and Complexity • Independent Thinkers & Learners

Communication • If you have not heard back from me or any other staff member within 24 hours of sending an email, please make contact by phone. • If you do not have email/computer access at home and require paper copies of information, please visit Mrs. Harmon or Mr. O’Connell. • If you have not received email communication from the school via Connect 5, please check with Mrs. Harmon or Mr. O’Connell to make sure the correct email is on file. • Report cards will be accessible via Home Access only for all 4 quarters this school year. (No paper copies will be sent home)

ASSIGNMENTS • All assignments should be recorded in students’ assignment notebooks. • Short term assignments are due the following day unless indicated otherwise. • Long term assignments will generally be due one week from the date they are assigned. • Students are allowed to complete all work in class if they have time to do so (except Words Their Way). • http://mysite.oswego308.org/schools/CH/staff.asp?EID=2140&ID=8523 • xtramath.org (3x a week or more)

Reading • Daily whole group and small group instruction. • Focus on OWL comprehension strategies. • Discussion groups and Reading Response Journals (RRJ). • Student driven novel studies. • Heavily focused on writing and student accountability. • Reading log (100 minutes a week: 5 days). • Cross-curricular units of study. • www.scholastic.com • www.lexile.com

Word study Words Their Way • At home and at school, students will be creating word sorts based on spelling patterns. • Students will be placed into flexible groups based on the results of their initial assessment. • Students may change classrooms to work with other 4th grade students on their sort. • WTW not only teaches students HOW to spell a word, but also WHY it is spelled that way.
