  8. What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure? Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a key technology for enabling successful desktop virtualization implementations – in all organizations, for network connected users. As a deployment model, VDI allows these users to access their personal desktops in the datacenter. Operating System • Desktops, Applications, User Data

  14. Che cos’è Windows VECD Windows VECD è un programma di sottoscrizione annuale che permette di licenziare correttamente copie virtuali di licenze Windows (XP, Windows Vista®, Windows 7) • Quali sono le versioni del VECD? Windows VECD Windows VECD for SA • Quali dispositivi sono coperti? • Rich client, Thin client • Rich client • La Software Assurance è un prerequisito? • Si • No • Qual’è il prezzo indicativo? • €27/anno/device • €132/anno/device • Comprende i benefici di Software assurance? • Si • Si • Total # of Windows VECD licenze richieste • (indipendentemente dalla piattaforma di virtualizzazione) • # of rich client senza SA # of rich client con SA • # of thin client

  15. Simple Device Based Licensing for Microsoft VDI – dal 1 luglio 2010 Every Device Accessing the VDI Infrastructure Needs to Be Licensed Microsoft VDI Suite Licensing for Windows client OS included in SA (Standard / Premium) PCs Under SA Licensing for Server and Management Infrastructure only Microsoft VDI Suite Windows VDA (Windows Virtual Desktop Access (Standard / Premium) Thin Clients/Non-SA Devices Licensing for Server and Management Infrastructure Licensing for Windows client OS

  16. Licensing Windows for VDI

  17. A Deeper Look at Windows VDAA Device Based Annual Subscription Program for Devices that Don’t Qualify for SA to License Virtual Copies of Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) • Windows VDA • Thin clients, third party devices • What devices can be covered? • Is Software Assurance a pre-requisite? • No • What is the retail price? • $100/year/device • Yes • Does it have • Software Assurance benefits? Total number of Windows VDA Licenses Required • Total number of Devices not Qualified for Windows Client SA Accessing Virtual Environment (Irrespective of virtualization infrastructure)

  18. Windows Licensing is Designed for Virtual Environments What you expect from your virtual desktop environment… • Improved Business Continuity • Increased Desktop Flexibility Additional Value • Install Windows on any combination of hardware and storage • Unlimited movement between servers and storage • Reassignment rights to another device after 90 days, or in case of endpoint failure • Access corporate desktop images from non-corporate Windows PCs • Single VDA license allows concurrent access for up to 4 VMs • Roam outside the corporate network – access desktop from non-corporate devices • Dynamic desktop licensing enabled through KMS/MAK activation • Unlimited backups of both running and stored VMs • Includes SA benefits such as 24*7 call support, training vouchers, access to Enterprise versions of Windows, etc • Option to purchase MDOP and WinFLP …and how Windows VDA / SA delivers

  19. What licensing vehicle is right for you? • Windows Client SA • Windows VDA • VDI using PCs as access devices • VDI with thin clients as access devices • VM on Contractor / Employee Owned PCs • VM on Portable Media • Blade PCs • Remote Boot VM from Network Storage Device • Recommended Valid

  20. Licensing for Microsoft VDI Suites Licensing the servers and management infrastructure

  21. Microsoft's VDI Offering $21/year/device $53/year/device • Two simple SKUs for Microsoft VDI • Simple device based annual subscription • Simple Licensing • Both SKUs are significantly cheaper than the competition • Enterprise grade features at a low price point in conjunction with Citrix • Excellent Value • Application virtualization, integrated management included in base SKU • Choice of VDI and session-based desktops in premium SKU • Comprehensive Technology

  28. VECD Scenarios

  29. Scenario 1– Standard Users • License Requirement • No additional licensing required • 100 PCs with SA • 80 Users • 50 VMs • License • If PCs are already covered with SA, no additional licensing is required • If PCs cannot upgrade to SA, 100 Windows VDA licenses • Scenario My company has 100 corporate PCs covered under SA that need to access our VDI environment. However, we only have 80 users and only 50 VMs are used at any one time.

  30. Scenario 2 – Shift Workers • Shift 1 • License Requirement • No additional licensing required • Shift 2 • Shift 3 • 100 PCs with SA • 300 Users • 150 VMs • License • If PCs are already covered with SA, no additional licensing is required • If PCs cannot upgrade to SA, 100 Windows VDA licenses • Scenario My company has 100 PCs with SA, with 300 workers accessing our VDI environment in shifts. At any time, 150 VMs are being accessed using VDI.

  31. Scenario 3 – Mixed Desktop Hardware • License Requirement • 100 Windows VDA Licenses • 100 PCs with SA • 100 Thin Clients • 100 Users • 150 VMs • License • 100 thin clients, 100 Windows VDA licenses • 100 PCs are already covered with SA, no additional licenses required • Scenario My company has 100 PCs and 100 thin clients using VDI. Only 100 devices are used at a time, and access 100 VMs running Windows Vista or Windows XP.

  32. Scenario 4 – Occasional Home Users • License Requirement • No additional Windows • VDA Licenses • Occasional • Home Access • 100 Employees • (each a named user of VDI device at work) • License • VDA licenses include home use rights for the primary (“named”) user of a company-owned PC covered under VDA. • Employee is a primary user of VDA device at work, no additional VDA licenses • Employee is not a primary user of VDA device at work, 100 Windows VDA licenses • Scenario My company has 100 employees who are the primary users of 100 thin clients covered under Windows VDA at work. These employees occasionally work from home and access the corporate VMs via VDI from their home machine (employee-owned) . • Note For Microsoft Office application use at home, you must have a Microsoft Office license with SA coverage and register for Home Use Rights at no additional cost.

  33. Scenario 5 – 100% Home Users • License Requirement • 100 Windows VDA Licenses • Full Time • Home Access • 100 Employees • (use work machines from home) • License • These non-corporate devices will have to be licensed. • 100 employee owned PCs, 100 VDA licenses required • Scenario My company has 100 employees who work from home and will access corporate VMs via VDI from their authorized device at home.

  34. Scenario 6– Roaming Users • License Requirement • 300 Windows VDA for SA Licenses • 100 Users • 300 thin clients • License • VDA is a device based license. • 300 devices accessing VDI, 300 VDA licenses • Scenario My company has 300 thin clients that need to access our VDI environment. However, we only have 100 users and only 50 VMs are used at any one time.

  35. Scenario 7 – Contractor-Owned PCs • License Requirement • 100 Windows VDA Licenses • 100 Contractors • Jan - June • 100 Contractors • June - Dec • License • Each contractor-owned PC will require a Windows VDA license, which comes with 90-day permanent reassignment rights. • 100 contractor PCs accessing VDI, 100 Windows VDA licenses • Scenario My company has 100 contractors who are working for 6 months, and then 100 different contractors are employed for the other 6 months. Each contractor will have one PC (owned by the contractor) to access our corporate VMs via VDI.
