  2. “From darkness and from death” • Love was born • Companion-Radiant Day • Hesiod: First Greek who tried to explain how things began (Hamilton 78)

  3. Personification • “To the people who told these stories all the universe was alive with the same kind of life they knew in themselves” (78) • “They were individual persons, so they personified everything which has the obvious marks of life” (79)

  4. Mother Earth & Father Heaven (Hamilton 79-80) • First creatures who had the appearance of life were the children of Mother Earth and Father Heaven • Gaea and Ouranos • Somewhat like man/unhuman • Cyclops • The Titans • Titan, Cronus • The Giants • The Erinyes (the Furies)-”as long as there was sin in the world they could not be banished”

  5. Cronus and Rhea • Cronus (Saturn) lord of the universe • Rhea-his sister-queen • One of their sons: Zeus rebelled against his father-Why? • Prometheus took sides with Zeus • Atlas: Why was he condemned? Pg. 82 • The powers of Heaven claimed victory over the forces of Earth

  6. Mankind • Earth-believed to be a round disk, divided into two equal parts by the Sea • Peace and security for mankind • Prometheus- “forethought, was very wise” • Epimetheus- “afterthought, was scatterbrained” (85)

  8. Pandora • “the gift of all” (88) • The first woman • “For Pandora, like all women, was possessed of a lively curiosity” (88) • What was in the box? • “Hope”

Biblical Allusions • Allusion: a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature; often indirect or brief references to well-known characters or events. • “So mortals learned that it is not possible to get the better of Zeus or ever deceive him” (88). • Plagues contained in the box: sorrow, mischief, etc. • The Erinyes (the Furies)-”as long as there was sin in the world they could not be banished”

  11. Prometheus: One of the Titans. He stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind, and was severely punished for it.
