  3. Insight into “Saving the Wetlands” • A 12 year old boy tries to save an irreplaceable part of his local environment. • With research, petitions, attendance at public hearings, and organizing a group, he fights to stop development on a wetland area.

  4. Purpose for Reading • Build vocabulary • Read, comprehend, and interpret literature • Relate literature to personal experience • Make inferences • Analyze persuasive techniques in literature.

  5. Vocabulary • Condominium (n.) – separately owned, grouped living units (a.k.a. “condo”) • Petition (n.) – formal document of request, signed by many people • Wizened (adj.) – withered • brandishing (v.) – Waving in a challenging way (showing off)
