Open Gloving • Performed by non-sterile team members performing sterile tasks • Sterile tasks include: • Insertion foley catheter • Surgical patient skin prep
Open Gloving • Wash hands using basic hand wash • To remove transient microorganisms and reduce resident microorganism count (normal flora) • Protect yourself and the patient • Retrieve sterile gloves in sterile peel pack • Retrieve items/supplies needed for actual sterile procedure • Foley catheter kit • Surgical skin prep kit
Open Gloving • On a dry, flat surface: • Open wrapped supply items • Open gloves and retrieve inside wrapper • Open wrapped, only touching outer edges (1 inch perimeter) • Do not reach over sterile contents • Secure first glove by pinching up only the cuff • Lift the gloves up and away from the wrapper • Pull onto hand by only touching the inside cuff • Hold now sterile hand up and nonsterile hand away from sterile contents
Open Gloving • With your sterile gloved hand, reach into the cuff of the remaining sterile glove securing it by making sure you sterile gloved hand is well inside the cuff • Lift the glove up and away from the sterile wrapper, do not drag across wrapper • Using you sterile hand, and keeping sterile fingers well away from you non-gloved hand, gently maneuver your non-gloved hand into the cuff, only touching the inside of the glove • Do not touch your sterile glove with you hand • Once both hand are gloved, you are ready to touch and arrange the sterile contents of the sterile items you have waiting for your planned sterile task

Soiled Glove Removal • With your dominant hand grab the palm firmly of non-dominant hand • Pull glove off of your non-dominant hand, inverting it as you pull • Do not touch your skin with the gloved hand • Remove slowing to avoid splattering of contents • Hold now removed glove in your gloved hand
Soiled Glove Removal • Now using your non-gloved hand, slip fingers under the cuff of the gloved hand between your glove inside and your skin • Touch only your skin and the inner glove lining • Invert the glove as you remove it to contain both of the gloves • Discard in trash • Wash your hands
