Consciousness What is it?
Consciousness Your individual awareness Your unique thoughts, memories, feelings & sensations What you are aware of… One of the earliest topics studied by psychologists…Wundt (introspection) William James compared consciousness to a stream…unbroken and continuous even with shifts and changes…
CONSCIOUSNESS HAS MANY MEANINGS Sensory Awareness All sensations around you; aware of things outside yourself Selective attention: focus on a particular stimuli; makes our senses keener Direct Inner Awareness Consciousness of images; can imagine feelings Sense of Self Understand we are unique individual people
Consciousness is: subjective – you can not share your experiences with others. Only you experience it. selective – you can be aware of some things while ignoring others. divided – you can pay attention to more than one thing at a time. continuous – each moment of consciousness blends into the next. changing – you are aware of shifts within seconds to awareness of other things multi-leveled – ranges from an alert and focused awareness to deep sleep
LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS Preconscious Level: Not in your awareness but could be recalled; can bring into your conscious by calling attention to it Unconscious Level: (subconscious) Unavailable under most circumstances; hidden from consciousness mind Nonconscious level: basic biological functions (blood flow, breathing, fingernails growing)
Freud argued that our dreams express our unconscious wishes… Dreamers remember the surface meaning of their dreams but the true meaning is hidden to avoid anxiety. According to Freud, dreams are designed to express our desires in a symbolic & often confusing manner to protect the dreamer’s peace of mind and ability to sleep.

Freud said we repress certain memories & feelings that are painful or unacceptable in our unconscious mind. According to Freud, we use defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from the anxiety, guilt, and shame of these memories & feelings.
A Mindful Walk – a brief assignment • Take a 10 minutes mindful walk. • What is a mindful walk? • A walk that focuses on your surroundings; increasing your self-awareness • Allow your mindful awareness to notice sights, sounds, physical sensations that may come up. Focus your awareness for a moment on that sight, sound, or sensation, and return to your awareness to your breathing. • When you return: write down what you experienced? What thoughts, memories, associations came up during that walk? What sights did you notice, physical sensations (changes in wind, texture of ground), smells, internal feelings?
How do our biological rhythms influence our daily functioning & our sleep? Our bodies synchronize with the 24 hour cycle of the day/night through a biological clock called a circadian rhythm. • Body temperature rises in the AM, peaks during day, and dips in the early afternoon, dropping before bed. • BRIGHT light in the AM triggers the circadian clock…. • Signals the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) • SCN causes brain to decrease melatonin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbQ0RxQu2gM
