The Life: The Early Days • Born HenrykGoldsmit in 1878 or 1879 in Warsaw. • Father was an attorney and mother who becomes a teacher. • As a child Henryk, was not allowed to play with the poorer children and could only bond with his grandmother to tell her his dreams. • He dreamed of helping children and showing that the world would be a better place with unity.
The Life : Adult Life • Growing up, he had to witness his family’s financial situation worsen as his dad had to be taken care of in a mental institution until he died. • These problems played a toll on his life and later became apart of some of his written works later. • He began to study medicine at Warsaw University as he wrote many books.(Children of the Streets, A Child of the Salon, etc.) • He also assumed the pseudonym of JanuszKorczak.
Living the Double Life • As a medical student, he was also interested in helping those who were poor and suffered. • In 1908, he began to work with orphans after being drafted as a doctor by the Russian army in East Asia. • He also worked in a Jewish children’s hospital and took children to summer camp. • In 1912, he was appointed the head of a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw with his partner StefaniaWilcynzka.
Running the Orphanage • While being the moderator of the orphanage, Korczak began to study children. • He was interested in how children should learn, be respected, and helped emotionally. • While on duty as a doctor for the Russian army, he worked in many more hospitals. • He wrote “How to Love Children” during this time. • He also went to many universities and lectured about health in children.
An Unfortunate Turn For the Worst • In the mid 1930’s, a change of power happened in the country and the people of Warsaw were put in ghettos. • As and elderly and tired man, he still worked in the orphanage to help children the best he could. • He refused to leave the children helpless even though he was suffering. He kept a diary during his time in the ghetto. • Korzack was offered an opportunity to leave the children when they were being put into train cars to go to Treblinka, but he stayed with the orphans.
The Legacy • Due to his courage, he was named “ Man of the Year” by Unesco. • Books, plays, and films have been created in his honor. His diary is looked at today as being a first hand account. • One thing that we should all remember from Korczak’s life is that just one person’s ambition and care for those who can go easily unlooked can impact the world.
Effects on Today • Today, students participate in an international book sharing project with other students who live more than one country away to discuss questions pertaining to “Night” by Elie Wiesel. • JanuszKorczak should be a role model for those to get involved in community service. • He also gives hope that even though the world can be going haywire there is still good in the world. • If there were more Korczak’s in the world today, would the world be a better place?
