3. Characteristics of the successful cyber student: Students who are enrolled in online courses are expected to: • Be self-motivated and self-disciplined • Be able to communicate through writing • Feel that high-quality learning can take place without going to a traditional classroom • Be willing to speak up for your education… maintain frequent communication with teacher • Be willing and able to commit to 8-9 hours a week per class • Meet course pacing requirements • Accept critical thinking and decision making as part of the learning process • Have access to a computer and the Internet • Be able to think ideas through before responding • Be open-minded about sharing work, experiences and life as part of the learning process Families are expected to support their child’s education by providing a supportive home learning environment with consistent access to the technology resources needed to access the child’s online courses. Families are to maintain an open line of communication with the child’s teachers and district liaison.

4. Expectations of students Time commitment– Each student is expected to spend approximately 8-9 hours per week completing work in each course. Communication– Each students is expected to maintain regular communication with his/her teachers by telephone or through established electronic methods. Students must respond to any e-mails or messages sent to them by school staff within 48 hours. “Plan B” for technology access– The lack of access to online course materials is not a valid excuse for not completing course work. Each student must have an alternate plan for accessing course content in the event that their primary plan is rendered ineffective (computer hardware failure, loss of Internet access, etc.). Exceptions apply if the reason for inability to access course materials is a direct result of maintenance or problems within the school’s technology systems.

Academic Materials/Equipment Textbooks and specific course consumable supplies Bridges- Text books are sent directly to students Get Fueled- BASD and Get Fueled work together to provide text books and consumables Technology- BASD provides all needed technology except for printers All supplies are to be returned at the completion of enrollment in cyber classes.

Technology procedures Borrowing technology equipment • May borrow district-owned computer and appropriate peripherals • "Appropriate peripherals" - defined as equipment required to complete course work. • All borrowed technology equipment will be procured and supported through the school district. • May use your own technology

13. Student Communication- Technology

14. Attendance • Students are expected to demonstrate regular account activity and/or academic progress in order to be deemed “present” in cyber courses. • Regular activity is defined as the student signing into his/her cyber course and/or electronic communication with the teacher of the cyber course. • Academic progress is defined as one week of completed work as determined by the teacher of the cyber course. The amount of work that must be completed must be in alignment with the regular pacing of the cyber course. • District Liaisons will be expected to take attendance for cyber students on the first day of each week for the prior week of school. Students are to be credited with attendance based on the criteria identified above. • For example, if a Monday is a day when school is not in session (holiday, non-instructional day, etc.), the Liaison will need to mark attendance for students on a Tuesday (the first day of the week). The attendance that the Liaison will be marking will be for the prior week’s account activity or academic progress.

15. Attendance • The learning management system for cyber courses will be functional and available for students to complete work 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Students may work within their courses at any time during the 24 hours of a day; however, attendance will be based on server sign-in logs/ communication with teachers or course progress made from each Monday at 12:00 AM through each Sunday at 11:59 PM. • Computer or Internet unavailability will not be considered as excused absences. Only medical-related excuses will be accepted. It is the responsibility of the parent/family to ensure that their child(ren) has reliable computer and Internet access. • Parents/families of students taking cyber courses will follow the same procedure for reporting absences and providing excuse notes as parents/families of face-to-face students. • BASH Picture day August 28, 2014 in the Commons Lobby • JHE Picture day September 16, 2014 • JHW Picture day September 17, 2014

16. Academic Interventions Possibilities include: • Remote or face-to-face meeting with student and parent/guardian • Students provided with onsite assistance navigating the learning management system • Students required to report to a physical school building for partial or full-day support while taking online courses • Students provided with a district content area tutor • Removal from cyber program; return to face-to-face learning environment

17. Testing Dates • All 10th grade students will need to attend BASH for the ASPIRE test scheduled for October 1 & 2, 2014 • All 11th grade students and pre-registered 10th grade students will need to attend BASH for the PSAT testing scheduled for October 15, 2014

18. Testing- Keystones • All students enrolled in Biology, Algebra I, and 10th grade English will need to participate in the Keystone Assessments as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. • Any student who was not proficient on any portion of the Keystone Assessment will be scheduled to retake the Keystone Assessment that was not successful. • Any student who is unsuccessful on the Keystone exams will be required to participate in on-line remediation support for these subjects

Testing Dates- Keystones The Fall Keystone Assessment dates are: • Biology-December 3 & 4, 2014 • Algebra I –December 8 & 9, 2014 • English Literature -December 10 & 11, 2014 The Spring Keystone Assessment date are: • Algebra I –May 13 & 14, 2015 • English Literature –May 18 & 19, 2015 • Biology -May 20 & 21, 2015
