  1. Redesigning Channels:The Laws & Regulations Experience Susan Fagan, Sally Martiny, & Tracey Westfield Web Workgroup Conference October 27, 2010 EPA Region 5, Chicago, Illinois

  2. Today, we’re talking about… • What is a channel? • Our approach to redesign • Our work so far • Long-term hopes and dreams • What we need from you

  3. What is a channel?

  4. What is a channel?(Speaking for Laws & Regulations...) • General definition: • Top-level of the EPA.gov information architecture. • Every web page in the WebCMS will be associated with one or more channel • L&R: Materials and content related to the legal and regulatory responsibilities and programs of the agency. Including, but not limited to, compliance and enforcement activities, guidance, regulatory development, permitting programs, etc. (See http://yosemite.epa.gov/OEI/webguide.nsf/content/metadatafaqs) • Our workgroup has approached it as a resource directory, but different because of the scope.

  7. Our approach to redesign:Goals | Draft • Provide a one-stop-shop for regulated entities who want to know: • How to comply with existing regulations. • What happens if they don't comply. • About the new regulations EPA is working on that could affect them in the future. • Help stakeholders* for EPA's regulations understand our regulatory activities and the impacts on them. • Provide basic information about how EPA regulations are developed. * Stakeholders include, but are not limited to, environmental activists, environmental justice communities, health protection activists, and other governments that help implement regulations (i.e., state, local, and tribal governments).

  8. Our work so farAnalysis • Reviewed statistics: • Most viewed pages • Most searched terms • Most asked questions • Developed content inventory • Moving to WebCMS

  9. Our work so farDesign • Wire frames for the new home page. • Wire frames for each type of subordinate page: • Topics • Business sectors • Laws/Eos • Regulations • Compliance • Enforcement • Policies/guidance docs • Maintenance procedures

  10. Our work so farMaintenance procedures (draft)

  11. Long-term hopes & dreams • Standardize “laws & regulations” info & “policy and guidance” info on microsites • …and on web pages about regs • Better understand how international information (e.g., treaties) fits into the channel. • Eliminate any topic or sector pages we created for the channel • Dynamically generate the Frequent Questions box

  12. What we need from you • Help us learn what to add to the: • Topic pages • Business sector pages • Laws & executive order list • Policies & guidance list • Help us define laws/regs formats for microsites and regulatory web pages
