  3. What is TEC? • Trade by enterprise characteristics (TEC) • TEC describe trade flows between countries with a breakdown by activity sectors • Focus on traders involved in international trade • Side product of ITGS: based on the micro data linkage between trade data and business registers

  4. Why are we interested? • Emergence of Global Value Chains call for more information on traders • Role of SMEs in internationalisation very important • TEC complements Structural Business Statistics and they are often used together

  5. TEC data sources • Trade micro data • Intrastat • VAT • Customs data • Business Register • Identification codes and linking • Basic economic characteristics • Activity sector by NACE • Number of employees (size-class): 0-9,10-49,50-249,250+ • Type of ownership: domestically/foreign controlled

TEC data compilation • Eurostat does not have access to micro-data • EU Member States compile the datasets and transmit them to Eurostat • Trade value aggregated over • Trader ID number • Partner country • Product code • Trade data are allocated to enterprises’ economic characteristics • Periodicity and frequency: annual • Statistical unit: Enterprise • Data in value and number of enterprises

TEC tables • 6 mandatory datasets • Activity by type of trader (exporter, importer, 2-way trader) • Activity by size class (number of employees) • Concentration of trade by activity • Activity by partner country • Activity by number of partner countries • Activity by product (CPA 2008) • 4 optional datasets • Activity by type of ownership (domestic/domestic MNE/foreign) • Activity by exports intensity • Detailed activity • Partner country by size-class

TEC tables breakdowns • Flow: imports/exports • Activity sector: aggregated/normal/detailed • Enterprise size class: 0-9,10-49,50-249,250+ • Concentration of trade: top 5,10,20,50,100,500,1000 • Partner: total/intra-EU/extra-EU + individual partner countries • Number of partner countries: 1,2,3-5,6-9,10-14,15-19, 20+ • Commodity: CPA at 2-digit level • Type of trader: exporter, importer, 2-way trader • Type of ownership: domestically/foreign controlled • Exports intensity: 0,0-24,25-49,50-74,75+

  9. TEC data availability • For years 2005 to 2007 on voluntary basis, incomplete coverage (NACE rev. 1.1) • From 2008 as mandatory data collection, full coverage (NACE rev. 2) • Deadline for transmission = 18 months after the reference year • Data are disseminated 4/5 months after the deadline

  12. What is TIC? • Trade by invoicing currency (TIC) • TIC describe trade flows with non-EU countries with a breakdown by invoicing currency and main product category • For non-EU trade only

  13. Why are we interested? • Information on the role of the euro in EU trade is important for ECB

  15. TIC data compilation • Eurostat does not have access to micro-data • EU Member States compile the datasets and transmit them to Eurostat • Trade value aggregated over • Invoicing Currency • Product category • Periodicity: Annual • Frequency: Every two year

TIC dataset breakdowns • Flow: imports/exports • Currency: Euro, National currency of MS not in the euro area, US dollars, Other • Partner: Total extra-EU • Commodity • Primary goods (SITC section 0-4 excluding division 33) • Petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (SITC division 33) • Manufactured goods (SITC section 5-8) • Total (SITC section 0-9)

  18. TIC data availability • For years 2010 and 2012 • Deadline for transmission = Within3 months following the reference year • Data are disseminated about 2 months after the deadline • Data are presented as shares by currency (to avoid mismatch with detailed statistics which are regularly updated)
