The Carbon Trust is a business-led, Government backed organisation • Set up in 2001, the Carbon Trust is an independent UK-wide company funded by the Climate Change Levy and Government • Our objectives are, • To help UK business and public sectors meet ongoing targets for carbon dioxide emissions • To increase business competitiveness through resource efficiency • To support the development of UK based low carbon technologies “The Carbon Trust will take the lead on low carbon technology and innovation in this country and put Britain in the lead internationally” The Prime Minister

LA Carbon Management programme • A one year, consultant supported programme aimed at developing an organisation wide strategy to embed ongoing carbon emissions reduction into the day to day business of the council • To date Carbon Trust works with 98 councils on LACM programme • That’s over one fifth of all UK councils

Scope of programme • GHG emissions under the control of of the local authority for example from: • Energy use in council owned or operated buildings (e.g offices, town halls, leisure facilities, schools, council houses, care homes) • Fuel use in council owned or operated vehicle fleets • Methane emissions from council owned or operated landfill sites • Streetlighting

  15. LACM Progress to date – 63 councils • LACM has identified over 260,000 tCO2 per year • That’s over 4000 tCO2 per council per year • Total Cost savings identified £20.5M per year • That’s over £300k per council per year • Implementation to date 40%
