WEST OAKLAND FINDINGS

We surveyed 100 youth living in West Oakland to understand their experiences and perspectives on violence and lack of safety. The findings reveal the importance of better communication, reducing drugs and gangs, creating more jobs and activities, and fostering a stronger sense of community. Explore the insights and comments from the youth themselves.

  1. WEST OAKLANDFINDINGS

  2. We Surveyed 100 Youthwho live in West Oakland

  3. What We Learned

  4. Youth Comments About Violence and Lack of Safety I’m always “watching my back”. “It’s scary sometimes – a lot of shootings and killings.” “A lotta violence – can’t go nowhere.” “It’s hard – there’s a lot of crime and violence.”

  5. Better Communicating “People need to learn to talk their problems out instead.” We should have “positive leaders showing kids what’s right.” Less Drugs and Gangs Violence can be reduced “if people stop doing and selling drugs.” We need to “get rid of the gangs. We need more leaders than followers.”

  6. How to Stop the Violence More Jobs and Activities for Youth We need “more job opportunities” and “more programs” for youth. “If people have more things to do, then there would be less violence.” Everybody Working Together “The community has to come together to solve problems.” We need “more people working together in the community.”

  7. Youth Comments About Sense of Community I like living in a “small community” with “all my friends and family around.” I was “born and raised here.” I “have history” here.
