  1. Preparing for Exams Skills for Success Workshop 6, 2011

  2. Learning Objectives for this Session This session aims to provide you with some ideas for greater success in exam through: • using your lectures efficiently; • managing your time productively; • determining what will be in the exam.

  3. Elements of exam preparation Exam preparation starts now! There are three elements to successful exam preparation (and you can start now.) • Lectures • Time management • Specific exam preparation

  4. Lectures 1 - Attend Attend every lecture. • Why? Because everything you need to know will be covered in the lectures. Be alert and attentive during the lecture. • Why? Because if you’re not attentive you won’t pick up what your lecturer is explaining.

  5. Lectures 2 - Prepare Prepare for lectures Read over lecture outlines and/or readings before the lecture. • Why? Because this will make you familiar with the subject matter and stimulate questions so you will seek the answers.

  6. Lectures 3 – After the lecture Review once, review twice, review three times. • Within 24 hours, spend 60 minutes summarising the lecture material. • Within 48 hours, spend 15 minutes further summarising you material from step 1. • Within 5 to 7 days, review again.

  7. Lectures 4 - How do I review? Use the three Re’s. • Reduce – summarise the information in your notes. • Re-organise – group the information under topics. • Re-present – • create a mind map, flow chart, or diagram • convert your mind map into a list of structured headings • use colours • just talk about it, or teach it to someone.

  8. Time Management – start early • Get organised early. • Create a timetable in the first week of semester, include leisure activities as well as study. • Get assistance earlier rather than later.

  9. Specific exam preparation What should I prepare for the exam? l m What do I need to know? What do I need to be able to do? What is the marker looking for? (criteria; expectations) What types of questions might be used?

  10. What should I prepare (1)? The topics to be covered in your exam can be found in the Subject Outline document in the Learning Outcomes section. You may be able to further narrow the content of the exam by noting the Learning Outcomes covered by earlier assessment tasks – these may not be covered again, check with your lecturer.

  11. What should I prepare (2)? Another guide to the content of the exam is the content of previous exams. Ask your lecturer if copies of previous exam papers can be made available to you.

  12. Don’t forget Good exam preparation isn’t rocket science, it just requires some planning, time and dedication – and you can start right now.
