Why we needed to do this program • PATS: 6,700 value-added ag farms in WI • Ever-increasing requests for help • Governor’s “Grow Wisconsin Initiative” • “…a bio-based economy for the 21st century.”
What we did about it • Trained 27 Ag Innovation Counselors • 14 local counselors, 11 state-level, 2 left UWEX • 2 co-directors, strong DATCP partnership • 10-week NxLevel business planning course • Also introductory FirstStep class • And 1-on-1 client counseling
What we did about it (cont’d) • Working with DATCP on Governors Consortium on Bio-Based Industry. (See http://bioeconomy.wi.gov) • Working with DATCP and Badger AgVest on investor education for producers • Working with DATCP on “Buy Local” initiative • Working with DATCP and Wisconsin Academy on “Future of Farming” initiative
So, what happened? • 14 AIC counselors not enough - 72 counties • NxLevel course • 1 complete, 2 in progress, 6 cancelled, 2 pending • 18 participants at $1,000 each (minus $750 “scholarship”) • 1-on-1 counselling • 187 “client contacts” in 2005 • A work-in-progress
