The Romans • Had a very large empire • So they needed a strong and big army! • Army had 3 tasks: • Capture new provinces • Keep them under control • Guard the borders
The army: • Soldiers were divided in groups: • Legions: infantry made from Roman citizens • Auxiliaries: infantry and cavalry made of men that were not Roman citizens. • These men became citizen when they finished their time in the army. • They never fought in their own province!
Soldiers: • Legion: 6000 soldiers • Century: 100 soldiers • Cohort: 600 soldiers
Train! • Soldiers trained a lot. • They used wooden swords • They trained to move as one unit. • Fought also in a phalanx (with shields that form a wall)
Roman armour and weapons: • Helmet: metal, to save the head. • Woollen tunic: wear under the armour. • Javelin: 2 spears to throw • Shield: large and rectangular, made from wood. • Upper body armour: metal plates fastened together, but soldier can move freely. • Sword: for hand to hand fighting. • Lower body armour: leather belt. • Sandals: leather sandals with metal beads into the bottom. • Extra’s: cloak, saw, basket, pickaxe, chain, leather strap, sickle and food.
