  1. CLIC Test Facility 3 The Controls System Stephane Deghaye AB-CO-FC Section Meeting 18-02-2004

  2. Overview • The CLIC machine – Introduction • The CTF3 – The Machine View • The CTF3 – The Controls View • The CTF3 – The Visit AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  3. Introduction to CLIC • CLIC: Compact LInear Collider • Electron-Positron collider • Energy range: 0.5 to 5 TeV • Two beams acceleration scheme • Compact: ~40 km • High gradient: 150 MV/m • High RF frequency: 30 GHz AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  4. CLIC Layout AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  5. CLIC Drive Beam Layout AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  6. Why the CTF3? CLIC Test Facility 3 addresses feasibility issues: • Test of drive bean generation (bunch frequency multiplication) • Produce RF power @ 30 GHz • Validate RF power source design • Test of high current – long pulse gun Reuse the LEP Pre-Injector complex AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  7. CTF3 Layout AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  8. Bunch Frequency Multiplication • The only way to produce enough RF power @ 30 GHz • Transform very long pulses into short pulses with higher frequency • Delay loop  multiplication by 2 • Combiner ring  multiplication by 5 • CTF3 klystrons @ 3 GHz  3 GHz x 2 x 5 = 30 GHz AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  9. Delay Loop AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  10. Combiner Ring AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  11. CTF3 Phases • The project is divided in 3 phases • Preliminary phase (already done) • Initial phase (where we are) • Nominal phase (end 2004 or early 2005) • This staging allows to deal with the increasing demands on performance as new hardware becomes available. AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  12. Preliminary Phase • Use LPI with a shortened linac and a modified EPA (isochronous) • New gun (CLIO by LAL) • Main goal: bunch frequency multiplication AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  13. Preliminary Phase: Results • Factor 5 recombination successfully performed • Bunch distance from 333 ps to 67 ps • Frequency from 3 GHz to 15 GHz AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  14. Initial Phase • New linac suited for high current • Another new gun (CTF3 gun by LAL too) • Main goals: fully loaded acceleration and RF power production AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  15. Nominal Phase • New delay loop and combiner ring with RF deflector @ 1.5 GHz and 3 GHz resp. • Main goals: recombination at high charge and RF power production. • Delay loop built by Frascati AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  16. The Controls View For the first run of 2004 we have: • 15 VME crates including the MTGC • 2 CAMAC crates • 1 PLC AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  17. Timing • Dedicated MTG (DMCRMTGC) producing 2 zero crossing synchronised telegrams (SCT & FCT) • SCT: 1.2 s BP, classical format. • FCT: 10 ms BP, bits patterns for PROD & MEAS groups. Ex: bit 4 in MEAS indicated whether we perform the Sem-Grid acquisition or not. AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  18. Power Converter • Still have CAMAC controlled power converters in the klystron gallery • Converters in building 2002 and 2009: CAMAC  MIL 1553. AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  19. RF Controls • Low level RF equipments (phaser, attenuator…) on 1553 • Modulator-Klystrons either CAMAC/MIL 1553 or PLC solutions • Phase compression control • Control using the Joeger functions generator • Acquisition using the SIS3300 ADC module • Water cooling stations based on PLC • Software to be done AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  20. Instrumentation • BPM, sem-grid, collimator, MTV & streak camera • New ADC module for the CTF3: SIS3300 • Use the machine 96 MHz as sampling clock • Need ECL triggers • Everything observed with xSampgen but dedicated developments forseen • CTF3 is the 1st machine with new VME based video system AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  21. Vacuum Equipments • Standard X25 based control • Gauges direct acquisitions for RF conditioning • New AT/VAC control system for the delay loop (see LEIR) AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  22. What’s next ? • New stepper motor solution from 2nd run • New PETS line to produce RF power from the 30 GHz harmonic • End of the year, End of the linac. • Transfer line and delay loop under the Frascati responsibility • Frascati will use as far as possible the CERN standards  Same equipments for CO AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  23. Acknowledgements • Great thanks to Frank Tecker (AP/OP) for the drawings and the explanations. AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye

  24. CTF3 – The visit Let’s have a look at the hardware !! AB/CO/FC Section Metting Stephane Deghaye
