  2. Job Overview • Mechanical engineers seem to have their hands in all kinds of things, and their work turns up all over the place. Think about it this way: when you drive a new car off the lot, you're driving away in the efforts of several engineers. It’s such a diverse field. Projects from colleague to colleague vary in drastic proportions. Mechanical engineers research, design and develop effective and efficient systems for heating, ventilating and air conditioning, power generation, transportation, processing and manufacturing. If it moves, it will likely be of interest to a mechanical engineer.

  3. Why I am Interested in this career • This career is a compilation of everything I like and enjoy to do. As soon as I found out about this career like 4 years ago I was like this is awesome because it is so much fun. It suits me perfectly. I love to draft, design or even improving a design and that is a main aspect of Mech. Eng.

  4. Education Pathway • 2 year hands on mechanical engineering program at Okanagan college = Diploma $12,000 More hands on and smaller classes • Bridge to a 2 year knowledge mechanical eng. program at the university of BC = Degree $20,000 Mostly all logic and books and huge classes

  5. Salary • Salary $50,000-$85,000 • Bonus $500-$10,000 • Total $52,000-$90,000 • Hourly $22-$40 Would there be a future demand • Absolutely because there will always be a high demand for newer and more advanced technologies.

  6. Working Conditions • The work load would be around 40 hrs/wk plus over time or extended hours needed to finish jobs on time. • Possible risks are always in effect. Good ways to prevent an injury would be, wearing eye protection, steel toed shoes, long sleeves/pants and sometimes a face mask and gloves can be appropriate. • Daily hours would be like 8am-4:30pm all year and indoor or outdoor depending on project.

  7. Related Occupations • There are three groups for moving mechanisms in mechanical engineering: • vehicles (planes, trains, boats and automobiles) • machines and mechanisms (robots, production assembly equipment, mechanical joints) • Hydraulics and pneumatics (water or air pumps, motors)

  8. Resources • https://accesscdn.bridges.ca • www.okanagan.bc.ca • www.ubc.ca/okanagan • I have talked with many people from post secondary institutions about this career • Career center • Mechanical engineers at my work
