  2. Our group: • Tycho De Meyer • Piotr Kania • Kinga Nowak • Sibran Vanroose • Charlotte Versaevel • Jill Deleu

  3. Main informations Who: UN-authorized coalition force from 34 nations led by the United States What: war against Iraq When: 2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991 Where: Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Israel

  4. What were the reasons? • Kuwait used a "slant drill"-a machine that can drill an oil well at an angle-to tap the al-Rumaila oilfield. • Iraq had borrowed $14 billion from Kuwait to pay for the Iran-Iraq War.

  5. How everything started?? 1. Theconflicthadappearedafterthe Iran-IraqWar. 2. Iraq had heavy debts to Kuwait and other countries for the financing of the war. 3. When negotiations between the two states futile, Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990. The Kuwait army only resisted to a few hours. 4. The Iraqi President Saddam Hussein declared that Kuwait was from now on a part of Iraq.

  6. Countries involved: * Iraq, leaded by their president Saddam Hoessein. * Kuwait, an Arab state * The United Kingdom, leaded by Norman Schwarzkopf *The United States, leaded by their president Bush * The Soviet-Union, leaded by MichailGorbatsjov

  7. From the humans’ side - During the war there were 35 000 deathly victims. If the war havenever started, this people would haveleadnormallifes, they would create families, thechildrenwouldhavetheirfathers - Nowadays Iraq is very poor and dangerous. The country is known by the war and numerous conflicts. - Maybe, if the American soldiers have never brought their help to Kuwait, Iraq wouldn’t have been angry for them. Probably they wouldn’t have attacked America (11th Sep. 2001). - All countries would have had much more money for their expansion. In fact they gave public money for participate in The Gulf War, for buying guns and needed equipment, killing people.

  8. That’swhy we wouldpresentoursolution: - SadamHusain, George H. W. Bush,JaberAl-Ahmad Al-JaberAl-Sabahorgananise a conference, whichhas place before starting any hostilities. • TheyinviteourPeacebringer – Manachem Begin – to findthebestNon-ViolentSolution • They decide that Iraq have to pay his debt not with money but with land. There are some oil reserves that would be very benefitial for Kuwait.

  9. - After the conference, in which both parties had the chance to speak their mind, in a non-violent way – they sign up the agreement. Both parties are happy and nobody is a victim.

  10. Why Menachem Begin? • He was a politician in Israel (prime minister), he had a close connection with israel and the neighbour countries who were involved in the gulf war, he was a politician, so he knew a lot about the politic system in the mid-east countries. • The second reason is that Menachem Begin helped with ending the war between Israel and Egypt. He signed the peace treaty between the two counties, so the knew what it means to be in a war situation and he also knew what it means to give things to the other parties to keep the peace in place.
