  1. Geometry and Spatial Sense Introduction Lesson Quiz

  2. Introduction This lesson will be covering transformations of different objects. This lesson is intended for 7th grade students. Geometry and Spatial Sense Standard 8. Perform translations, reflections, rotations and dilations of two dimensional figures using a variety of methods (paper folding, tracing, graph paper). After this lesson, students will be able to identify specific transformations such as translations, rotations, reflections and dilations.

  3. Lesson Directions To successfully make it through this lesson please click the arrows to either continue to the next slide or go back to the previous slide. After you make it through the slides that cover the lesson, there will be a quiz for you to take. If you do not feel prepared, you are able to go back to the beginning of the lesson.

  4. In this lesson we will discuss different transformations. To transform an object, there are specific ways to describe how a figure changed. The transformations that you will learn about include: Translations Reflections Rotations Dilations

  5. Translation A translation “slides” an object a fixed distance in a given direction. The original object and its translation have the same shape and size, and face the same direction. Translations are slides!

  6. Translation Now, let’s examine a translation related to coordinate geometry. The example shows how each vertex moves the same distance in the same direction.

  7. Reflection A reflection is a "flip" of an object over a line.  Let's look at two very common reflections:  a horizontal reflection and a vertical reflection. *Notice the colored vertices for each triangle.

  8. Rotation A rotation is a transformation that is performed by "spinning" the object around a fixed point known as the center of rotation.  You can rotate your object at any degree measure, but 90° and 180° are two of the most common.

  9. Dilation Dilation is a similarity transformation in which a figure is enlarged or reduced. A dilation shows the same shape but a different size.

  10. You have now completed the lesson!! If you understand all of the previous slides, you are ready to take the quiz and be tested on your new found knowledge. If you do not understand all of the previous slides, go back to the lesson and review as many times as necessary until you understand the content. Homepage Lesson Quiz
