  4. Let’s practice our note taking skills … With the following slides, take notes on the various countries! Remember … USE SHORTCUTS!!

  5. Although one of the smallest countries of southern Asia, it is one of the wealthiest! The Sultan of Brunei is known for his great wealth! Brunei citizens have a high standard of living, with free medical services and education. Students can even attend foreign universities for free! The wealth comes from petroleum and natural gas reserves off its coast. However, these reserves are expected to run out in the early 2000’s; therefore, Brunei must develop other means of income.

  6. Take 5 … What is “standard of living”? • the level of material comfort enjoyed by a person, group, or society • Level of material comfort? • level of wealth, comfort, material goods and necessities available to people in a country • The financial health of a population

  7. Take 5 … What do you think impacts the “standard of living”? • Literacy Rate! • The higher the literacy rate = higher standard of living! • The lower the literacy rate = lower standard of living! • Why do you think this is? Now … back to Brunei …

  10. The Sultan of Brunei is one of the richest men in the world!

  11. He also holds the record of owning the most cars by one individual in the entire world! With over 5,000 cars (at last count), he parks them in 5 warehouses. One reporter said that it would take 1 ½ hours to bring out the car that is parked at the very end!

Singapore has 4 official languages, one of the highest literary rates in southern Asia (91%), and is one of the most prosperous countries in southern Asia. Singapore is made up of one large island, also called Singapore, and 50 smaller islands, about half being uninhabited.

  15. Although one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Singapore remains one of the cleanest cities in the world! How? Strict laws!

  16. All of these are illegal in Singapore! If caught, you will have to pay large fines or even be caned!

  17. More laws to be aware of in Singapore! • The fine for forgetting to flush the toilet in a public convenience is $500. • Racial harmony is carefully promoted. Racial slurs, such as those you might hear in football chants could actually wind you up in jail, or getting caned. • If you have a balcony or garden, be aware that if you have flower pots, or anywhere that collects water and mosquito larvae, you risk being fined as a result.
