  2. Beginning • 1933-34 • First New Deal by FDR

  3. Purpose • Provided direct relief for the needy • $500 million funded eventually went up to $3,000,000,000 next two years • Half went to states as grant-in-aid • Help furnish food and clothing to unemployed, aged, and ill • Other half distributed to state relief programs

  4. Information • Harry Hopkins headed program • For every $3 within the state program, FERA donated $1 • Taxpayers angry about how much they had to pay • The Social Security Board took over FERA in 1935

  5. Impact • Millions of Americans benefited • Hungry and needy were fed and clothed • Provided work for over 20 million people • Street construction, bridge building, and sewer laying projects started • School and public building repair • Establishment of FERA offices and stores • Many repair shops and projects • Set up more emergency relief programs later on
