  1. Timeline of North American History

  2. 1492 – Christopher Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic ocean, landing in the Bahamas and mistaking them for India. He named them the West Indies.

  3. 1607 – England’s Virginia Company establishes a permanent colony at Jamestown, Virginia.

  4. 1619 – Slaves began arriving in the southern colonies of the original 13 colonies. They are what allows plantation owners and southern colonies to prosper.

  5. 1775 – Original Thirteen colonies unite against England and start the Revolutionary War, a war for independence from England based on unfair tax practices.

  6. 1776 – United States Continental Congress signs the Declaration of Independence, breaking ties with England and becoming an independent nation made up of 13 states which were the original 13 colonies.

  7. 1787 – U.S. Constitution is signed.

  8. 1803 – Louisiana Purchase is bought from France, doubling the size of the United States overnight.

  9. 1860 – Eleven southern states secede from the union to become the Confederate States of America. • 1861 – The Civil War begins in Charleston, SC, when Confederate troops fire cannons at the Union-held Fort Sumter.
