  2. The award honors the legacy of Thomas T. Mercer, an outstanding researcher and author, whose work encompassed aerosol physics and chemistry as well as inhalation toxicology, industrial hygiene, and health physics. The Thomas T. Mercer Joint Prize “recognizes excellence in the areas of pharmaceutical aerosols and inhalable materials.”

Mercer Joint Prize • Peter Gehr • University of Bern, Switzerland • Nominated by Dr. Gerhard Scheuch • Ph.D. Biology, 1974, and Privatdozent in Anatomy and Histology, 1983, University of Bern • over 140 peer-reviewed papers and over 40 book chapters • “His distinguished achievements include research and publications in the fields of ling anatomy and physiology, cell biology, aerosol deposition and clearance, inhalation toxicology, and, more recently, the important field of nanotoxicology” • “His observations contributed enormously to our current understanding that nanoparticles can easily penetrate through the tissue barrier, enter the circulation and are ultimately deposited in many organs where they can initiate adverse health effects” • “…a gifted, competent and enthusiastic scientist and a person of great integrity and personality.”
