The Great Gatsby Notes Chapter Five
Gatsby Gets his Dream Gatsby gets his dream – the remainder of the book is an analysis of the disintegration of that dream Gatsby's social level - “new money” means that he is not really accepted by the upper class He is unaware of social norms
Gatsby's Social Level, continued We have seen evidences of G's vulgarity Garish ties, suits, car, house, etc. He wears a silver shirt and a gold tie to meet Daisy The shirts in his house – symbolize the spiritual quality of the dream (How so?)
Getting Ready for and Seeing Daisy The grounds of Gatsby's house are like an amusement park He does not know that a display of wealth without tradition will not allow him entry into Daisy's world His language and actions also show his social level He offers Nick money for helping him see Daisy - That action makes Nick a pimp Gatsby is unaware that this is wrong
Seeing Daisy, continued Gatsby seems unaware that it is wrong Why Daisy would never marry him Gatsby acts like an adolescent His dream and his life are built on adolescent dreams – a youthful capacity for faith and wonder It is the key to his ability to maintain the vision and the key to his downfall – paradox
More Observations Gatsby begins to realize that no object not even Daisy, can replace the ideal he has created Tragedy – he can find no correlative to his vast spiritual capacities General American problem – American material affluence could never match the romantic promise of the new world Gatsby never uses material objects in a selfish way: everything he owns exists for the attainment of his vision This makes him spiritually greater than society around him
Gatsby's House's History (There is a “spoiler” on this page. Don’t read it if you want to be surprised at the end of the book.) A brewer built it 10 years earlier The brewer offers to pay 5 years of tenants' taxes if the neighboring cottages would have their roofs thatched with straw Make them look like serfs, peasants People refused and it broke his heart; dies in house He is like G- attains dream, but reality shatters it Buys a house to get entrance to society – is still denied access; dies in it
End of Chapter 5 Gatsby passes through several states of emotion in his meeting with Daisy Embarrassment, joy, wonder, running down like an overwound clock Losing the dream Green light has lost its significance Phone call from G's scurrilous business connections – dream is built on corruption
End of Chapter 5, continued Klipspringer plays “The Love Nest” Gatsby's house has become one Words of song “the rich get richer and the poor get – children” are revealing
