PROJECT OVERVIEW “No matter how good you get you can always get better, and that’s the exciting part!” – Tiger Woods Aims to provide relevant customised information to irrigators that will • Improve energy efficiency • $ave money • Drive innovation & productivity
HOW WILL THIS BE ACHIEVED? 1 3 2 Farm Scale Benchmarking Exercise Paddock or Pump Scale Assessments Case Studies & Fact Sheets Energy Efficiency Gains for Australian Irrigators
1 FARM SCALE BENCHMARKING Energy Efficiency Gains for Australian Irrigators
FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS • ''It is very interesting to see how I sit in relation to other farmers. It would be interesting to drill down to different soil types and similar farm sizes or general location to compare myself to similar enterprises.“ • "Being able to see the differences in real dollar values is really good." "I have already identified a potential saving of $1,800 a quarter just by changing tariffs for one pump. I am really surprised and now am interested to see what further savings can be made on all my other pumps."
2 PADDOCK OR PUMP SCALEASSESSMENTS Energy Efficiency Gains for Australian Irrigators
PUMP ASSESSMENT – EXAMPLE 1 • Recycle Pit • 1. Setting 1 – partially closed • Flow = 47 L/s (~169,000L/h) • Cost • $1.23/hour • $7.25/ML • 2. Setting 2 – fully opened • Flow = 51 L/s (~184,000L/h) • Cost • $1.84/hour • $10.00/ML • Based on tariff 66 (consumption cost only)
PUMP ASSESSMENT – EXAMPLE 2 • Open Well System • 1. Pump System 1 • Energy Consumption = 7.7 kWh/ML/m head • 2. Pump System 2 • Energy Consumption = 4 kWh/ML/m head • Reduce the amount of water applied • A typical irrigation was applying more than twice the amount of water required for the soil and crop uptake • Use a different tariff • Potential saving of approx. $5,000/year across the whole farm
3 CASE STUDIES AND FACT SHEETS http://eegai.nceastg.usq.edu.au/ Energy Efficiency Gains for Australian Irrigators
PROJECT OUTPUTS • Farm-scale benchmarking analysis of 220 farms • More detailed pump or irrigation assessments (program can only cover the cost of 30) • Fact sheets and case study reports • Grower workshops • Website hosting energy efficiency information, project details, progress reports and technical news • Videos documenting the engagement process and mechanism of delivering information and case studies
