Graduate School at WSU • The mission of the Graduate School is to support and advance quality graduate education at WSU. • We • provide oversight on all administrative aspects of graduate education (admission to degree granting), • we articulate a vision of excellence for the graduate community, and • we strive to enhance the intellectual community of scholars composed of our faculty and students.
WSU offers advanced study in: • Forty-one master's programs • one specialist program • twelve doctoral programs • over twenty graduate certificate programs. • 2,500+ students, or about 18% of WSU students, is a graduate student. • WSU grants about 75 doctoral degrees and 800 master's degrees a year. • About 30% of our graduate students receive some kind of financial support for their graduate education.
Graduate Faculty • WSU Graduate Faculty members are responsible for the health and well-being of our graduate programs and graduate students. • These faculty members – • teach graduate courses • mentor graduate students • direct graduate student research and creative projects (as a chair and as a member of terminal project, thesis and dissertation committees) • involve graduate students in their own research and creative efforts, and publications/presentations
Membership on the graduate faculty is not automatic. • To become members, regular faculty members submit a membership request. The membership request is reviewed and acted upon by a department committee, the academic dean and the graduate dean. • Full members of the graduate faculty who work in doctoral programs are also reviewed and approved by the Doctoral Program Subcouncil before they may chair doctoral dissertations.
Responsibilities of a graduate faculty include: • Teaching graduate courses • Advising and mentoring graduate students • Supervising graduate students • Serving on student committees • Staying active on research, scholarship, performance, and creative work • Governance and administration • Other duties assigned by Chair and Dean
