  5. Rags to Riches: Gary’s Story of Survival • Gary Paulsen grew up with alcoholic parents. • He spent much of his childhood with relatives. • As a boy, Gary would hunt rabbits and other small game in and out of season. • Because of Gary’s bad home life, the game warden would look the other way.

  6. Gary went to the public library to escape his problems. • A librarian helped him discover a new life through books. • Gary was hooked on books and reading. • His life was transformed through books.

  7. Gary was inspired to write some of his stories after running the 1,180-mile Alaskan Iditarod twice. • Of Gary’s 175 books, three were awarded the Newbery Honor Award: HATCHET, DOGSONG, and THE WINTER ROOM.
