Palace of Versailles history • Versailles was the royal residence of France from 1682-1789 • The palace started as a hunting lodge for King Louis XIII, built in 1624 • His son Louis XVI expanded it and turned it into the palace • The palace was redesigned in 1676, 1742 & 1755 • There were three men in charge of the first project: Louis Le Vau, architect; Charles Le Brun, painter and decorator; and Andre Le Notre, landscape architect http://www.linkparis.com/versailles.htm
More history • During the Seven Years War France lost most of its assets to Great Britain putting them in debt by 4000 million dollars- this is the beginning of the French Revolution • When Louis the XVI became king, was redesigned, and additions were made for Marie Antoinette • In 1788 the government went bankrupt • October 6,1789 an angry mob marched into the palace demanding bread, and then stormed into the queens room • When the monarchy fell the palace went to the new government, royal furniture and art work was sold
Becoming a museum • Napoleon Bonaparte began the first work in restoration, which was continued by the new monarchy, Louis XVIII • In the 1930’s Louis-Phillip turned the palace into a museum • Art work and furniture was returned to the palace, by a decree in 1962 • In 1986 the largest restoration took place involving 80 rooms • Because the building is so large only small area’s are open to the public http://www.flickr.com/photos/kbg-london/510039547/
