3. Erasmus Erasmus enables higher education students, teachers and institutions in 31 European countries to benefit from study or work opportunities in another country.

4. What is Erasmus? • Largest organised mobility programme in the world • Forms part of the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme. Administered in the UK by the British Council since 2007 • 3,100 HE institutions in 31 countries participate • Introduced in 1987 to encourage student mobility for work and study • Two million students have taken part

5. What can you do? • Students can go on a study period for 3-12 months • Students can do a work placement for 3-12 months • Students can combine a study period with a work • placement • Staff (teaching and administrative) can go for • teaching/training/job shadowing

6. Who can take part? • Students and staff from HE and HE/FE institutions • Students must be doing a higher education degree or a short term higher vocational education course • Students from all subject areas are eligible • Part-time students are also eligible to participate • Participants must be a national of a participating country (EU, EEA, Turkey) or recognised by your country of residence as a refugee, stateless person or permanent resident

10. Comenius Assistants Intending and trainee teachers in schools across Europe. They enhance British cultural awareness across the curriculum, and offer classes in their native language.

11. What can you do? • Act as a UK ambassador and assist with the teaching of English • Teach your specialist subject • Bring a European dimension to the school • Help develop links with other European countries • Working hours 12-16 hours a week • Placement duration 13-45 weeks • Paid a monthly grant and return travel expenses • Beginner’s language grant available (or EILC courses)

12. Who can take part? • Intending and trainee teachers from across Europe • UK applicants are native level speakers of English and a UK national or a national of one of the other participating countries, but ordinarily resident in the UK • Academic requirements are one of the following: • You have a PGCE teaching qualification, but have not yet worked as a qualified teacher • You are studying a degree which could give you access to study for a PGCE teaching qualification in future All applicants must have aminimum of two years of study at higher education levelproviding access to a career as a teacher in any subject

14. Application procedure • 29 January 2010 - Application deadline (annual deadline) • February-March – Acknowledgement and assessment of all applications • March-April – Applicants informed of outcome of assessment, and matching begins • May - Matching meeting for all National Agencies • June – Applicants informed about outcome of matching and sent details of matched school • July – Pre-departure briefing for UK assistants • August – Placements can start from 1 August and must end by 31 July at the latest

16. English Language Assistants Opportunities for UK undergraduates and graduates to improve their foreign language skills in a real-life context, and to contribute to the teaching of English in schools abroad.

17. What can you do? • Teach English, mainly at secondary school level • Receive a salary for you employment by the foreign school/authorities in the country • Work for set contract period (eg 7 or 9 months) • Get involved in broader life of school • Improve your language skills and enhance your CV • Gain life experience, travel and make new friends!

18. Who can take part? • native-standard speaker of English • minimum of Higher/A(S) Level in appropriate language (except China) • successfully completed 2 years at university before posts start • completed secondary schooling in UK • hold a UK or other EU country passport • meet the requirements of the host country • talk to us for ‘special cases’

Application procedure • December – 1 December 2009 online application deadline (preferences and contact details) • January – 31 January 2010 full application form to British Council Scotland • February/March – receipt of application acknowledged to tutors. Some interviews taking place • April onwards - matching meetings by country; we start to inform on region you will work in • Late May – specific details on postings coming through • August –Detailed info packs sent to all assistants. First departures and induction courses abroad NB – POSTINGS STILL COMING THROUGH • September/October- 1 Sep/1 Oct = start date for most assistants
