Conservation Actions to Date • CPAWS NB developed affinity group called Friends of Restigouche – partnership with Arpin Canoe Restigouche to raise awareness of conservation needs among ecotourism clients – getting outdoor crowd more vocal • Restigouche is Marquee priority site in CPAWS Eastern Woodlands program – profiling it across the country, including as part of The Big Wild
Actions to Date • Workshop to plan conservation strategies in 2005 with local groups; developed report on High Conservation Value Areas in NB part of Restigouche • workshop in 2007 with SNAP Quebec and NCC Quebec and Atlantic re cross-border issues
Actions and Partners Continued Strategic planning workshop Sept.08 – natural areas planning and profile raising with TNC, 2C1F, WCS Canada, NCC Atlantic and Quebec, CPAWS/SNAP NB and Quebec, Restigouche Watershed Council, Gespe'gewaq Mi'gmaq Resource Council
Hope to Accomplish- • Continue to raise profile of Restigouche conservation importance across the region and nationally • Get enough vocal support to allow NB government to establish protected areas in watershed – at least 50,000 hectares; plus increased conservation on Quebec side • Continue partner development on both sides of NB/Quebec border to conserve riparian areas and forests
Top 3 Actions Needed • International attention to NB government by showcasing regional importance of Restigouche (outdoor or nature magazines, other popular media) • New financial support for campaigning in and for the Restigouche • More coordination to recommend better forest management practices for connectivity
