The remaining Units in Grade 5 (Units 13-16), will be formatted differently than Units 1-12. • Formats will be in PowerPoint form. • Core instruction will be provided in the following areas: • Fractions, Decimal and Percents • Ratios/Rates • Integers/Expressions/Inequalities • Graphing and Data • In addition, based on student data (Formative assessments, unit assessments, etc.), these last few weeks of school should also focus on differentiating your instruction (small groups) to meet the needs of students on current grade level standards not yet mastered. • It would be appropriate given the multitude of resources provided in Units 1-12 to revisit and utilize those resources not already used. • Only utilize current grade level content to determine students’ progress for the 4th nine weeks.   3. Content Development A ratio is a multiplicative comparison of two quantities or measures. A key developmental milestone is the ability of a student to begin to think of a ratio as a distinct entity, different from the two measures that made it up. Ratios and proportions involve multiplicative rather than additive comparisons. Equivalent ratios result from multiplication or division, not from addition or subtraction. For example: In Mr. Frost’s class, there are 2 girls for every 3 boys. If there are 8 girls in his class, how many boys are there? The ratio is 2 girls : 3 boys. So think: 8 girls to ? boys. Each entity, girls and boys, is multiplied by 4to determine that there are 12 boys in his class. We can represent this ratio as 8 : 12. The ultimate goal for students with ratios is the development of proportional reasoning, NOT a collection of skills/procedures. A ratio can also be a rate. A rate is a comparison of the measures of two different things or quantities; the measuring unit is different for each value. For example, If 4 similar boats carry 36 passengers, then the comparison of 4 boats to 36 passengers is a ratio. Boats and passengers are different types of things. The rate would be the passengers per boat. The ratio of passengers to boats is 36 : 4. The rate is 9 passengers per boat. All rates of speed are ratios that compare distance to time, such as, driving at 55 mph or jogging at 9 minutes per mile.
