  3. Younger years • The son of a Reverend • Youngest of five children • Both parents were high in intelligence. • The poetic and imaginative faculty came from his mother.

  4. Fitted for college by William Wells Entered Harvard in his 16th year He began writing when very young and published his first book, "A Year's Life," in 1841, the year after leaving Harvard Law School College years

  5. He became a professor of modern language and Literature at Harvard in 1855. After college years

  6. Poems • Some of his poems were: • Auspex • May is a pious fraud • My love (memory poem) • She came and went • War (anti-slavery poem)
