Available Operating Systems • Microsoft Windows – Highly used OS’s from Microsoft are XP, Vista and now Windows 7 as of October 22nd 2009. • Apple Macintosh – Most commonly used OS from Mac is “Mac OS X” • Linux/Unix – Commonly Used OS’s from Linux or Unix are Ubuntu and Solaris respectively • All of these operating system producers also have server editions of their software.

Advantages and Disadvantages – Windows • Advantages • Windows is primarily cheaper then Mac when purchased as a whole. • Windows provides almost full customization of hardware. • Windows provides compatibility with most day to day software. • Windows knowledge base and support is fairly extensive. • Disadvantages • Not as secure when it comes to viruses as most people target windows. • Windows doesn’t have as nice an interface as Mac. In terms of simplicity.

Advantages and Disadvantages – Linux • Advantages • Linux is free, making a great budget OS. • Linux is useable with almost any open source software. • Linux uses less computer resources. • If Linux has a problem there is usually a patch the next day. • Disadvantages • Linux can be harder to use and understand. • Linux can be incompatible with some hardware if the Linux edition is out of date. Approx 2 years.

  5. Advantages and Disadvantages – Mac OS X • Advantages • Mac software is usually cheaper then Windows software. • Mac provides great multimedia software and functionality. • Disadvantages • Mac is extremely expensive. • Mac’s knowledge base and support is not as extensive as Windows.

Summary Windows, Mac OS X and Linux • All operating systems, no matter how you feel can function to do pretty much anything the user wants. • Linux provides users with the ability to use, obtain and keep up to date with it being open source. • Windows provides a much more stable Knowledge base as most users everywhere have used Windows for personal or business work. • Mac OS X provides a great ground on all multimedia applications with ease of movie making and sound editing.
