  14. Original Credit - questions

  15. Original Credit • Remember, these are classes that have never been taken before • Done via the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) • Availability of scholarships

  16. Texas Virtual School Network • http://txvsn.org/portal/ • Authorized in 2009 and endorsed by TEA • Benefits include: • An alternative (additions) to regular course offerings at home school - mostly rural settings • Dual credit offerings beyond what most high schools can provide • Additional opportunity for more credits to be earned

  17. Texas Virtual School Network • Courses are taught by TX certified teachers • Provider = district or entity that ‘teaches’ the course • Receiver = district where student taking course normally attends • Cover Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills • Approval process for each course listed

  18. Aledo ISD available TxVSN courses • Speech (0.5 credits) • Health (0.5 credits) • Government (0.5 credits) • Economics (0.5 credits) • Psychology (0.5 credits) • Sociology (0.5 credits)

  19. Aledo ISD – why limited courses? • Success rates (here and in other districts) • EOC/STAAR/TAKS assessments • Virtual learning environment is different

  20. Cost - Scholarships • Aledo ISD will apply for enough scholarships for each course students want to take • Each scholarship is good for one student to take one course during the summer of 2013

  21. Cost - Scholarships • If no scholarships are awarded, then 2 options: • TxVSN and pay provider’s fee ($350-$400) • TTUISD for original credit (still limited to previously mentioned course offerings) • If some scholarships are awarded, but not enough for all courses, then: • Any free lunch students would receive first • Lottery would be used to award remaining after that

  22. Important things to remember • Contact over the summer: • Scott Kessel, Aledo ISD TxVSN District Coordinator • Will monitor progress • Will administer tests at AHS • Will maintain regular contact with you and your teacher • Email, cell phone number will be provided!!

  23. Next Steps • Before you leave: • Please sign out on one of the sheets before you leave, indicating what you are wanting from summer school • For credit retrieval option, plan to make contact with appropriate counselor soon • For original credit option, note which class(es) to be taken and Scott Kessel will make contact with you next week
